The debate over whether or not an annual poker tournament scheduled for the end of the month in Israel should go ahead or not will reach its climax at the High Court of Justice.

According to news site YNetNews.com, a hearing is soon to take place which will look into the petition filed by the Israel Poker Association against the police, who have been objecting to the legality of such tournaments. In response to the petition, the State has said that Texas hold’em is an illegal game, therefore those who engage in it are committing an offence.

The IPA hopes that if the tournament is allowed to go ahead, then this will lead to the game being legalised in Israel. It will make its argument by presenting a report by Professor Ehud Lehrer of the School of Mathematical Sciences at Tel Aviv University, which claims that in order to win in poker, skill and understanding of the game is essential, not just luck.

Poker fans now await the decision of the High Court.
