Danny Chevalier Wins PokerStars ANZPT Queenstown Main Event
Danny Chevalier from Melbourne, Australia, had lived in Queenstown, New Zealand, for 11 years before the inaugural stop took place in his current hometown for the PokerStars Australia New Zealand Poker Tour. Chevalier beat out a field of 135 players to win the ANZPT Queenstown main event and take home the top prize worth $87,435 (AUD). The event featured a buy-in of $2,500 and garnered a total prize pool of $303,750, with the top 18 players placing in the money.
The three-day poker tournament had 18 players remaining on the final day of competition, and it took just two hours for those final players to reduce to a final table of nine. John Guthrie entered the final table with 888,000 in chips (more than one-third of the chips in play) but his stack soon fell and he was eliminated in sixth place.
This opened the door for Chevalier, who made the most of the opportunity to score his first major tournament victory. The heads-up final lasted just over 30 minutes. On the final hand, Andrew Hinrichsen moved all in preflop, and Chevalier made the call. Their cards:
Chevalier: A 7
Hinrichsen: Q 10
Board: Q 5 4 8 A
Chevalier flopped the nut flush to win the tournament, while Hinrichsen was awarded the runner-up prize of $57,285. The final stop for season one on the ANZPT will take place in Queensland, Australia, and it begins on Aug. 5.
Tony Hachem also solidified his lead in the ANZPT overall points race by cashing in 18th place in Queenstown to take home $3,015. The Team PokerStars Australia member now holds 160 points in the ANZPT Player of the Year race for the lead.
Here are the results from the ANZPT Queenstown final table:
1: Daniel Chevalier — $87,435
2: Andrew Hinrichsen — $57,285
3: Glenn Maiden — $33,165
4: Mark Walker — $27,135
5: Steven Smith — $21,105
6: John Guthrie — $15,075
7: John Pye — $12,060
