Online Poker -- OPOY Race Review, Aug. 7, 2009Shaun Deeb Still Leads Packed Top 10 |
|
What was once just a two-horse race has turned into quite the battle atop the 2009 Online Player of the Year race. Now four players sit with more than 6,000 points, and a slew of talented grinders await behind them for their chance to get back into contention.
With just four months and change left in the race, Shaun “TedsFishFry” Deeb (pictured right) still leads the way with 6,890 points. Despite a heavy World Series of Poker schedule, Deeb still managed to have a great summer online, making four OPOY-qualifying final tables and winning the $75,000 guarantee on Full Tilt. He also finished second in both the Super Tuesday and the Sunday Brawl.
Steve “gboro780” Gross owns the second-place position, thanks to continued Sunday success in the Sunday $200 rebuy. Gross remains just 678 points behind Deeb.
Sitting in third place is Nicholas “GripDsNutz” Grippo (pictured left). Grippo, who also goes by Grippolio and SHIPKINS, had a great summer, taking down both the Absolute Poker $150,000 guarantee and the $200,000 guarantee with rebuys on Full Tilt. With 6,172 points, Grippo is just 40 points from second place.
The biggest mover in the past couple months is fourth-place resident David “SirSands” Sands (pictured below). Starting in May, Sands won FTOPS XII event No. 10, the $55 rebuy on PokerStars, the Cake $250,000 guarantee, and, most recently, the Sunday 500, not to mention a runner-up finish in the Wednesday Quarter Million.
One of the more consistent players in the race has been Aditya “Intervention” Agarwal, who sits in fifth place. Agarwal has five final tables since June, including a win in the Absolute Poker $150,000 guarantee.
The rest of the top 10 rounds out with Nick “FU_15” Maimone, Jeremiah “Believer8219” Vinsant, Hunter “HEMIpowerSWT” Frey, Chris “Moorman1” Moorman, and Thayer “THAY3R” Rasmussen.
