It’s that time of year again. While the November Nine final table is highly anticipated by all in the poker community, another prestigious festival of events takes off across the pond, in London city.

To get everyone warmed up and excited, Betfair’s Free Million Dollar Game played out yesterday at the Casino at the Empire, which saw 18 online qualifiers from the site compete for $1 million. Greek youngster Anestis Metsas made his way towards millionaire-dom via a couple of online freerolls and a live regional qualifier. The 23-year-old had to beat thousands to get to London, and then faced his toughest 18 competitors yet in a battle that lasted 10 hours yesterday.

Metsas said, “It’s unbelievable to have won, this amazing win has given me the confidence to believe I can compete against the best players in Europe and the rest of the World. Having won I’m now going to buy my way into the £1,000 no-limit hold’em tomorrow [later today] and after that who knows.”

A poker volcano is moments away from erupting upon London city, as the World Series of Poker Europe prepares to begin today, followed by the PokerStars European Poker Tour London. The FullTilt Million Dollar Cash Game finished up yesterday, as did the English Poker Open, and the Durrr Million Dollar Challenge is yet to begin.

But for now, all eyes are centred upon WSOPE 2009. The Series kicks off at London Clubs International in Leicester Square at 12 p.m. (BST) with the £1,000 + £75 no-limit hold’em event. The four-day event is a freezeout, and this October’s issue of Card Player’s Hand 2 Hand Combat star, Jesper Hougaard took it down for a payday of £144,218.

The festival will continue with four more events, three bracelet, and one invitation-only. Check back here for daily recaps as the tournaments unfold.
