With the first major event of 2006 out of the way, Steve Paul-Ambrose can enjoy being at the top of Card Player Magazine's Player of the Year list, at least for a little while.

Paul-Ambrose took home $1,388,600 and 1,440 Player of the Year points for winning the 2006 PokerStars Caribbean Poker Adventure. Men "the Master" Nguyen will be honored as the 2005 Card Player Magazine Player of the Year Gala next month.

Nguyen earned 4,604 Player of the Year points by making 16 final tables, winning four events and placing in the top three eight times.

Points are awarded using a formulae that takes into consideration the amount of the buy-in, the number of entrants, and place finished. In events with a buy-in of $10,000 or more, players receive points for making the final three tables. In all other events, the final table only receives points.

Card Player Magazine made two changes to include more tournaments to its Player of the Year race. In 2006, players who compete in invitational events with at least 60 players and a prize pool of $500,000 will receive points. So will players who compete in international events with a prize pool of more than $1,500,000.

With so many tournaments scheduled for 2006, Paul-Ambrose's stay at the top of the list might be brief. Winning one event won't earn anyone Player of the Year honors. Not even if his name is Joseph Hachem.
