World Series of Poker Europe Event 3 -- Day 1A-List Field Turns Out for £5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Event |
|
Day 1 of the World Series of Poker Europe (sponsored by Betfair) event No. 3, the £5,000 pot-limit Omaha tournament, kicked off with 154 wannabe bracelet winners. Among the many Internet phenomenons, live poker gods, and exciting newcomers in the field were Irish Open champion Christer Johansson, Michael Binger, Barny Boatman, Anthony Lellouche, Sorel Mizzi, David “Devilfish” Ulliott, Chris Ferguson, Barry Greenstein [pictured right], and Tom “Durrrr” Dwan.
The day ended with 35 players remaining, and an interesting bunch, at that. 18 players will get paid from a total prize pool of £770,000, with the champion taking home the £204,048 top prize and, of course, a bracelet.
Here are some big bust out hands from the day:
Shaun Deeb got rid of his neighbor, and one of the biggest threats to the field, Phil Ivey. Deeb raised from the button with A Q 10 7, and Ivey, in the small blind, made the call. The flop was Q 9 2, and Ivey bet the pot. Deeb moved all in, and Ivey called. Ivey revealed J-9-9-3 for the middle set, and Deeb was in need of a diamond, unless the board paired to give Ivey a full house. The turn gave Deeb his diamond, the river was a brick, and Ivey hit the rail.
James Akenhead [pictured left] was another November Niner who failed to make the cut. He raised to 1,500 from under the gun plus one with K Q J J, only to be reraised to 4,000 from the button. Akenhead called, and the flop fell A J 3. Akenhead check-raised all in and was called. His opponent turned over A A 7 6, and Akenhead saw no improvement as the turn was dealt the 4 and the river was the 5.
Sami Kelopuro found himself all in preflop for around 9,000 with A K 8 7 versus A Q 10 2. The board was dealt 7 5 5 Q 4, and his opponent hit a flush to put Kelopuro on the other side of the rail.
Bracelet holder Vitaly Lunkin also made his exit early at the hands of Michael Greco.
Other casualties included Jason Mercier, Jeff Madsen, Jeff Lisandro, Andy Bloch, Julian Gardner, Bruno Fitoussi, David Ulliott, William Thorson, Peter Jepsen, Mike Matusow, and Nenad Medic.
The top 10 in chips at end of play were:
Jani Vilmunen — 304,100
Ashton Griffin — 184,100
Sorel Mizzi — 153,700
Howard Lederer — 151,800
Andrey Zaichenko — 151,300
Jeffrey Kimber — 134,900
Niall Chalton — 122,200
Aarno Kiveilo — 114,500
Tony Bloom — 114,500
Noah Boeken — 112,600
Among the 36 players still in the mix are Howard Lederer, Barry Greenstein, Shaun Deeb, Jeff Kimber, John O’Shea, Theo Jorgensen, and Dave Callaghan. Day 2 begins today at 2 p.m. (GMT + 1).
