Yevgeniy Timoshenko Takes the POY Lead

Yevgeniy Timoshenko won the $5,000 no-limit hold’em main event at the World Championship of Online Poker on PokerStars. Timoshenko was awarded 2,880 Card Player Player of the Year points for the victory, along with $1,715,200, and he jumped into the POY lead with 5,413 points total. Timoshenko was also awarded 2,400 Card Player Online Player of the Year points, and he currently sits in ninth place in that race with 6,652 points total. If Timoshenko were to win both titles, he would become the first player to accomplish the feat. Timoshenko’s other large win in the live arena in 2009 came at the World Poker Tour Championship in April. He was awarded $2,149,960 and 2,448 POY points for that title. Timoshenko has now made $3,903,584 playing live tournament poker in 2009, which also gives him the title of money leader for the year. Timoshenko holds a lead of 825 points over the current second-place player, Eric Baldwin. This is where the 2009 POY race gets serious!

In the world of live tournament poker, two bracelets were awarded at the World Series of Poker Europe this week, with J.P. Kelley (event No. 1 winner — awarded 960 POY points) capturing one, and Erik Cajelais (event No.2 winner — awarded 576 POY points) winning the other. Olvivier Busquet also won a World Poker Tour title at the Borgata Poker Open (1,800 POY points). You can read about each of these final tables below.
