Europe Wins Inaugural Caesar’s Cup Team Poker Event

Annette Obrestad’s European Team Triumph 4-1 Over U.S. Challengers

Annette Obrestad captained Europe to victory in the Caesar's CupEurope defeated America in the inaugural Caesar’s Cup by a margin of 4-1 at the World Series of Poker Europe yesterday.

The invite-only event saw Annette Obrestad captain the European team while Daniel Negreanu (a Canadian by birth) captained the U.S. team.

The made-for-TV tournament got underway late at the Empire casino with Barry Greenstein stepping in as a last-minute replacement for Chris Ferguson on the U.S. team. The format was a best four-of-seven matches structure with the first four matches being played by team’s of two players. Whoever reached four victories first would be deemed the winner.

Things got off to a bad start for the U.S. with Ilari Sahamies and Patrik Antonius taking swift victories from, Huck Seed and Phil Ivey.

Europe went 2-0 up when Bertrand Grospellier and online qualifier John Harvey beat Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth.

Doyle Brunson and Jennifer Harman pulled a match back for the U.S., beating Dario Minieri and Annette Obrestad but Europe edged closer to the finishing line when Gus Hansen and Peter Eastgate beat John Juanda and Barry Greenstein.

The format then reverted to heads-up with Europe holding a 3-1 lead and Annette Obrestad clinched victory with an emphatic win over Huck Seed.
