Imagine you are taking a chance with a huge chunk of your bankroll in a game you really can’t afford to be playing in. You look down at pocket queens and after a series of raises, find yourself all in preflop against an opponent’s big slick. Unless you happen to be in Bobby’s Room, the dealer is going to peel the flop, turn and river, giving you a 50/50 shot at keeping your roll intact.
Now imagine that you can lower the variance by running that same exact hand twice. Sure, you can still lose, but now your risk of ruin is lessened and you can breathe a bit easier knowing that you’ll probably just wind up losing the rake.
Run It Twice
Full Tilt recently upgraded their software to make such a situation a possibility. With their new Run It Twice feature, players can pre-select the option while competing in cash games, allowing themselves the opportunity to see up to all five community cards dealt a second time.
The feature is only available at Run It Twice tables, which is currently being utilized in “Ivey’s Room.” After a trial run is completed, more tables will be added to the lobby. So far, the response from the players on the rail has been positive, but some are wary of the extra rake taken out of the pot.
Cashout Tournaments
The other software upgrade came in the form of a new format for tournaments that allows some of the prize pool to be cashed out by the players. In a cashout tournament, half of your buy-in goes into the prize pool, and the other half goes into a specially designated cashout pool. At any point in the tournament before the final table, a player can choose to cash out between 10 and 100 percent of their stack for a guaranteed payout.
Say you are playing in a $20+$2 tournament and started with 1,500 in chips. Those 1,500 in chips are now worth $10, should you choose to exit the tournament. Double up to a 3,000 stack and now you’ve already earned your buy-in back. Then again, you can decide to only cash out a percentage of your stack, guaranteeing yourself a payday while still allowing your tournament to continue, albeit with fewer chips.
The cashout period ends once the tournament reaches the final table. The cashout pool is depleted every time someone utilizes the feature, but all leftover money once the final table begins gets awarded to the final tablists based on the current cashout value of their stacks.
