WPT -- Bellagio Festa al Lago Main Event Day 2The Final Field Size is 275 Players -- Top 27 Get Paid |
|
The official number of players in the 2009 World Poker Tour Festa al Lago Classic stands at 275, and the total prize pool is more than $4 million. The official payout structure was released near the end of play tonight, and the top prize for the tournament stands at $1,218,225. The top 27 players will walk away with prize money, and since only 98 players remained at the end of day 2 the money should be reached tomorrow. Last year, Festa al Lago attracted 368 players, and although that number is less in 2009, the response to the extra late registration has been positive from the majority of players at Bellagio. The final field size this year was surely helped by the 30 players who decided to skip the first day of play and entered the tournament on day 2.

Two of the biggest names in the field who decided to take the late approach to the tournament busted out of play shortly after they entered today. Phil Hellmuth (pictured above right) entered the field during level 7, but before level 9 came to a close, he was eliminated. Two hands where Hellmuth held A-K ultimately led to his demise. Both hands were coin flips, and each time Hellmuth lost the flip. On Hellmuth’s final hand, Dee Luong held pocket jacks to send him to the rail.
Kenny Tran (pictured left) jumped into play near the end of level 9 but he lasted only a few minutes after sitting down to a stack that had been blinded down to 48,000. Tran moved all in preflop with K Q, and Steve Gross made the call with 7 7. The board came A 2 2 K 7, and Tran was quickly eliminated by the full house of Gross. The hand took the chip stack of Gross up to 405,000. Gross had a tough level to end the day with 301,900, but the Card Player Online Player of the Year leader will have a chance to make a deep run in the tournament tomorrow.
One of the best hands of the day involved Justin Young. He opened a pot for a raise from early position, and the player on the button called. The flop fell 8 7 5, and Young led out for 6,500. His opponent made the call, and the turn fell Q. Young bet 13,500, and the button called again. The river fell 2, and Young fired out 25,000. The button raised to 75,000, and Young went into the tank. He eventually made the call, and his opponent instantly mucked. Young flipped over A 10 as he collected the pot and grew his stack to 290,000. Young also had a tough last level and ended the night with just 261,500, but his gutsy call with ace high was the most impressive play of the day.
At the end of play, Jason Somerville topped the leader board with 557,000. Day 3 will begin at noon PDT tomorrow, and CardPlayer.com will be there to bring you all of the action in live updates, chip counts, and photos.
