Englishman James Akenhead and Frenchman Antoine Saout (pictured) yesterday came ninth and third respectively at the final table of the World Series of Poker main event.
Following last year’s victory for Dane Peter Eastgate in the world championship event, European hopes had been pinned on a repeat but young UK hope James Akenhead eventually ran his short stack into Kevin Schaffel’s 9-9 holding 3-3, exiting first from the final table and earning $1.26 million.
Frenchman Saout outperformed his second shortest stack throughout the marathon 15 hour session to finish a highly creditable third taking home $3.48 million at the Penn and Teller Theater at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
