The PokerStars.com UK & Ireland Poker Tour got underway in Galway yesterday with the Irish Poker Championship main event. The €2,000 buy in event attracted 259 player, up from last year’s 255 but down on 2007’s 298, creating a prize pool of €471,380 and a first prize of €125,000.
The tournament, held at the Radisson SAS in Galway, attracted 147 players from Ireland, 52 players from the UK, and a total of 22 countries were represented from as far away as Canada and Brazil.
At the end of day one the top ten in chips included a Team PokerStars pro (Jude Ainsworth), a former IPC winner (Kieran Walsh), and a rugby internationalist (Reggie Corrigan).
