Day 1A of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure is officially in the books, with a total of 669 entrants. In order to surpass last year’s total of 1,347, day 1B will need a modest 678 players to register. Though we are a long way from official numbers, some tournament officials have estimated the Wednesday field could be as large as 1,000, meaning the eventual winner could walk away with something in the $4 million range.
Most of the rail focused on Team PokerStars pro Daniel Negreanu, (pictured left), who had an up and down (but mostly up) day at the tables. After giving the order to “shuffle up and deal,” Negreanu proceeded to pick apart his table, getting his stack as high as the 100,000 mark before a stumble sent him into the middle of the pack. Negreanu rebounded to finish the night near the top of the pack with 124,000 in chips. Check out Card Player TV’s coverage of an interesting hand that Negreanu encountered during his session.
The far-and-away chip leader heading into the night is Wayne Bentley, an online qualifier from the UK. He started off his tournament the right way, quickly doubling up his starting stack with pocket aces against an opponent’s pocket kings. He then followed that up by winning a large race and making a flush against Ben Lamb to surpass the rest of the field. Then, he assured his status as the big stack when he took all of Bill Edler’s 100,000-chip stack by flopping a set of eights against Edler’s pocket kings. Bentley finished the day with 329,500, which was over six figures more than his nearest competitor.
Other players to finish the day on a strong note included Amnon Filippi, Kevin Saul, and Eric Froehlich. Last year’s champion, Poorya Nazari (pictured right), was able to survive the day, but third-place finisher Benny Spindler wasn’t quite so fortunate. Card Player’s own and WSOP Europe Champion Barry Shulman also had a strong day, finishing with 113,000. The other member of the Card Player family in action on day 1A was Allyn Jaffrey Shulman, and she finished the night with 29,100.
Each player began with 30,000 in chips, or 300 big blinds, but it didn’t take much to get those chips in play. With hour-long levels, the field steadily decreased until the final seconds ticked off the clock, and the end result was 386 survivors. Those players will get a nice day off to enjoy the water slides, dolphin exhibit, and fine dining while a new batch of competitors enters what is quickly becoming the most prestigious tournament outside of the World Series of Poker.
