It seems that nobody told the players at the WPT L.A. Poker Classic that we were in a recession. A total of 745 players put up the $10,000 buy-in, creating a total prize pool of $7,152,000. The official number was 744 at first, but a late tournament entry was called in to bump the field by one.
That player was Tom “durrrr” Dwan, (pictured left) who spent the better part of the afternoon looking for a flight from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Dwan couldn’t get to the Commerce in time and will be forced to start day 2 with a blinded down stack of about 15,000.
We’re guessing that Dwan won’t be too discouraged, thanks to a successful night at Full Tilt Poker’s nosebleed games. Dwan finished his session up nearly $1 million. That payday will only be matched if he finishes the tournament in second place or better. First place will walk away with $1,788,001.
A total of 72 players will make the money sometime over the next few days and those fortunate to do so will make a minimum of $18,595 for their efforts.

Notables who finished the day with some of the bigger stacks in the room included Jon Luu, Shawn Buchanan, Lisa Hamilton, Jimmy Fricke, Dan Martin, Jon Turner, J.C. Tran, Danny Wong, Mark Seif and recent NAPT Venetian winner Tom Marchese. Defending champion Cornel Andrew Cimpan failed to survive the day.
Despite the player friendly blind structure, a whopping 270 were eliminated during the day, leaving about 475 survivors. Those players will return on Saturday to play an additional five levels and continue their march towards the final table.
