Many poker sites made it quite clear in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti just how generous they and their players were. In the first two weeks after the 7.0 earthquake, the poker community donated more than $1.5 million to relief efforts.
But the charitable work doesn’t stop there.
UB, Absolute Poker, and Full Tilt have announced recent initiatives to raise more money for charity with special poker tournaments.
UB and Absolute Poker are hosting what they are calling their “Second Sundays” series on the Cereus Network, wherein the sites will host a $10 charity tournament every second Sunday through June.
UB/AP Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Foundation Charity Tournament
This weekend, the network run a tournament for the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Foundation. The $10 event starts at 10 a.m. PST on Sunday. Cash, UB and Absolute poker gear, and entries into the sites’ $200,000-guaranteed tournament are all up for grabs. The winner will also get a Rockwell Time limited-edition stainless steel “Pink” sports watch to commemorate and support cancer causes and research.
“We’re struggling with a difficult economy,” said Annie Duke, a UB pro. “Charitable organizations are experiencing a drastic decline in donations. Most people, though sympathetic to charitable causes, have simply cut back on personal expenditures. UB and Absolute are global communities. Its members have been very generous and supportive of charitable efforts in the past. This grassroots movement could mobilize more people to join our community in order to effectively make a difference.”
Duke stressed the importance of a larger number of people making an effort to give as opposed to just a few people opening up their wallets.
“This is not about individuals each making large donations. It’s about a large number of people collectively donating small amounts of money in order to make a difference,” said Duke.
Full Tilt Poker Earth Day Charity Poker Tournament
Full Tilt Poker is also trying to do its part and has teamed up with a variety of organizations for worthy causes over the last few months.
This month, the site is running a $10+$10 Earth Day tournament on Thursday, April 22 at 8:30 p.m. ET. The no-limit hold’em event, hosted by Full Tilt Pro Mandy Baker, can be found under the Tournaments > Private tab of the Full Tilt lobby. The password for the event is “Earth Day”. The money raised in the event will benefit the Nature Conservancy.
