Following on from last week’s news that Australia’s National Rugby League was putting on hold its relationship with FullTiltPoker.net after government pressure is the news that Cronulla rugby club has been told to seek legal advice over its sponsorship arrangement with PokerStars.net.
The digital economy department of government is investigating whether these “play money” .net sites breach the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 according to The Sun-Herald.
A spokesperson for Minister Stephen Conroy told the newspaper that, “If the department forms the view that a possible offence has occurred it will refer the matter to the AFP for investigation.”
Both the Sydney Roosters, who last week came under fire for its relationship with FullTiltPoker.net, and Cronulla have said they are confident their sponsorship deals do not breach the law because they are not advertising online poker where real money changes hands.
