The SCOOP.The 2010 PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) is now officially in the record books, and by all indications, it was an overwhelming success. A grand total of 130,746 unique players participated in the series, which culminated with three versions of the main event spaced out over two days of play. An astounding 174 countries were represented during the 38-event stretch, and over $63 million was awarded in prize money.

Just 27 players were remaining in the high event when day 2 began. Team PokerStars pro Angel Guillen represented his site well, but couldn’t muster more than a 15th-place finish with his short stack. As the final table drew near, the rail was buzzing about Benjamin “delaney_kid” Delaney, who was not only a contender in the high event, but in the medium event, as well.

Unfortunately for the Aussie, he was the first player to be knocked off the final table in ninth place when his pocket tens failed to improve against pocket queens. Just a few moments later, Delaney was eliminated in 10th place in the medium event, when once again his pocket tens failed to bring him a double-up. Delaney picked up a total of $116,000 for his double cash, but it was a far cry from the nearly $1.75 million up for grabs had he managed to win both tournaments.

Ryan FairThe chip leader entering the final table was Ryan “toetagU” Fair, who was fortunate enough to have his A-K suited take down another player’s A-K with just 19 players remaining. That pot put him in a position to wait out the field a bit and move up the pay ladder.

Delaney had trouble with pocket tens, but he wasn’t the only one. Joe “jpmetalman” Patrick picked up the pesky pair a bit later, but they were no match against pocket aces. Then just a few hands later, Sam “siola” Iola was all in with tens and failed to win his race, busting in seventh place.

It took a cooler to determine the sixth-place finisher, when BongBob ran his set of eights into a set of jacks to end his tournament run. Danny “cpfactor” Smith then saw his dominated K-J run into Fair’s A-J to make the tournament four-handed. Greg “DuckU” Hobson, the chip leader entering the day, was the next to go when his pocket jacks failed to hold against big slick.

Three-handed, talk of a deal arose, but Kristoffer “Sumpas” Thorsson refused. Brad “BradL” Lipson was then eliminated, setting Thorsson up with Fair for the title. Thorsson had run hot in major PokerStars events leading up to this tournament, but his pocket sevens couldn’t catch against Fair’s pocket jacks, earning him the runner-up finish and $851,775. Fair, a long-time online grinder known for his deep run in the 2009 WSOP Main Event, picked up the outright win and a nice $1,162,350 payday.
