Add Turning Stone Casino in central New York to the list of casinos that have expanded or renovated their poker rooms in the last year.

The new poker room at Turning Stone opened Wednesday. The expansion added 10 tables, three cages windows, three 65-inch plasma screen player board monitors and five 42-inch plasma televisions.

The seating system is completely computerized and the casino expects to have player kiosks installed sometime this summer that will allow players to register for seats through the computer using a player's card.

The décor has gone from poker room neutral to what Jason DiBenedetto, the poker room director calls "rustic Italian." The expansion also gives players more room to walk among the tables.

The first poker room opened in 1999 with 22 tables. The casino opened in 1993. In recent years, the poker room has become one of the busiest parts of the casino.

"For us, on Friday and Saturday nights, with 22 tables, we were turning away hundreds of players," DiBenedetto said. "It's obviously a much more profitable area than it used to be."

The casino holds 10 poker tournaments a week with buy-ins ranging from $40 to $120 and the fourth Turning Stone Casino Resort Poker Classic is scheduled for May. The five-tournament event climaxes with a $1,050 buy-in championship on May 20. Cash satellites start May 12.
