The $2,500 AUD no-limit hold’em main event at the PokerStars Australia New Zealand Poker Tour stop at the Gold Coast in Australia crowned a champion on Sunday, August 15. The tournament drew a strong field of 287 players, which represented growth from the field of 249 players that attended last year. The champion was Nauv Kashyap, who walked away with $182,965 from the total prize pool of $717,250. Here is a look at the chip counts and seating chart when the all-Australian final table began:
Seat 1: Aaron Benton — 751,000
Seat 2: Nauv Kashyap — 1,585,000
Seat 3: Le Vuong Van — 168,000
Seat 4: Liam O’Rourke — 788,000
Seat 5: Joel Dodds — 573,000
Seat 6: Dominic Coombe — 189,000
Seat 7: Brad Wilson — 736,000
Seat 8: Ricky Kroesen — 492,000
Seat 9: Michael Spilkin — 307,000
Action was fast from the very start of the final table with a double elimination on the very first hand. Dominic Coombe moved all in preflop from middle position and Michal Spilkin made the call on the button. Overnight chip leader Nauv Kashyap moved all in over the top of everyone and Spilkin decided to commit all of his chips as well. Their cards:
Spilkin: A J
Coombe: A 9
Kashyap: Q Q
Board: 7 6 5 4 7
Coombe was eliminated in ninth place on the short stack for $16,145 and Spilkin exited right behind him in eighth place for $21,525. Kashyap held a monster chip lead after the hand with 2 million. It then took an hour for Le Vuong Van to fall in seventh place. He was all in with A-9 and had a lead over the A-5 of Aaron Benton, but the board ran out J-8-7-2-5 to rescue Benton and send Van home with $27,265.
Two players fell in back-to-back hands next to continue the heightened pace of action. Benton made a club flush on the river to come from behind again and eliminate Brad Wilson in sixth place ($34,440). Benton then took out Joel Dodds with Ac 6c in the hole against the J 4 of Dodds on an A-9-8-3-2 board. Dodds took his leave in fifth place with $41,975.
Benton’s luck ran out when his Q-8 ran into the Q-10 of Liam O’Rourke on a Q-10-8-A-3 board to double up O’Rourke to a million and leave Benton with just 100,000. He was eliminated shortly thereafter when he could only muster a nine-high against the A-10 of Kashyap on a Q-7-3-Q-10 board. Benton left with $50,255 in prize money in fourth place. O’Rourke then fell in third place and took home $64,575 in prize money. He moved all in on a flop of Q 6 4 with A Q in the hole and Ricky Kroesen made the call with Q 10. The turn and river fell 10 8 and the final two were set.
The first pot of consequence in the final match brought the chip counts pretty close to even between Kashyap (2.9 million) and Kroesen (2.7 million). Kroesen flopped a boat on a 5-5-4 flop with 5-4 in the hole and he was able to extract 625,000 plus the blinds and antes from Kashyap. Kroesen took the lead a short time later and he ran his chip stack up to 4 million at one point of the final.
Kashyap then doubled up with A-J racing against the pocket eights of Kroesen and he took the lead a short time later. Kroesen then stole back the chip lead after he was dealt pocket aces to jump back up to 3 million.
It had taken just three hours to reach the final heads-up match, but that match was well on its way to eclipsing three hours in length before two hands brought things to a prompt conclusion. The penultimate hand saw Kroesen moved all in with 9 6 in the hole on a board of A 9 5 3 and Kashyap made a snap call with K J in the hole. The river fell 7 and Kashyap held 4.7 million while Kroesen was crippled with 900,000.
On the final hand Kroesen moved all in preflop for 600,000 and Kashyap made the call. Their cards:
Kroesen: K 2
Kashyap: 10 10
Board: 7 7 5 7 8
Kashyap won the tournament with pocket tens and he collected the top prize worth $182,965. Kroesen was the runner up and he also collected a six-figure payout for his performance worth $116,965.
