Online Poker -- Tom Dwan Begins Battle With Jungleman12Dwan Down $518,190 After 5,862 Hands in Second Durrrr Challenge |

Tom “durrrr” Dwan has begun his second Durrrr Challenge.
Even though his match with Patrik Antonius is still more than 10,000 hands away from completion, Dwan started dueling against Daniel “jungleman12” Cates early Friday morning.
Cates, a University of Maryland student, about a month ago expressed interest in Dwan’s offer to be the next participant in the contest.
When the two online pros sat down for their first session, it looked like the second installment of the Durrrr Challenge also would be all Dwan’s. (He currently is up more than $2 million versus Antonius.)
At $200-$400 no-limit hold’em on Full Tilt Poker, Cates, who is up significantly lifetime versus Dwan, had the small blind and the button. He raised to $1,200, and Dwan called with the 7 7. The flop came 8 7 4, and Dwan checked. Cates bet $2,000, and Dwan just called.
The A on the turn prompted another check from Dwan. Cates fired $5,600, and Dwan check-raised to $19,800. Cates called, and the 5 landed on the river. Dwan went all in for $45,387.50, and Cates called. Dwan’s set was exposed, and Cates mucked. Dwan raked in the $136,774.50 pot.
The pair called it quits after 1,651 hands, with Dwan up about $130,000.
However, when Dwan and Cates resumed action later in the morning after a short break, the pendulum started to swing toward Cates.
At $200-$400 no-limit hold’em, Cates had the button and the small blind. He raised to $800, and Dwan three-bet to $2,600. Cates four-bet to $6,400, and Dwan made the call. The flop came J 8 6, and Dwan checked. Cates bet $7,600, and Dwan called.
The 9 fell on the turn, and Dwan checked again. Cates bet $21,400 this time. Dwan called, and the 4 landed on the river. Dwan checked for a third time, and Cates put Dwan all in for $61,092. Dwan tanked before finally making the call, and he mucked when the A A of his opponent were exposed. Cates scooped the $192,984 pot.
Before the players decided to take another break, Cates had won a few other pots worth more than six figures to erase his deficit and take a $518,190 lead in the young challenge.
A total of 5,862 hands were recorded in just the first morning of Dwan’s battle with Cates. Dwan and Antonius have been playing for more than a year and still have about 20 percent out of the required 50,000 hands remaining.
Unlike the match Antonius, the duel with Cates will consist of no-limit hold’em instead of pot-limit Omaha. However, the same side-bet action applies — Dwan will win an additional $500,000 if he finishes up a dollar, and Cates will pocket an extra $1.5 million if he’s in the black when the challenge concludes.
