Aussies and Kiwis now have a poker tour to call their own.
In keeping with its affinity for creating new poker tours to satisfy the increasing global hunger for the game, PokerStars has announced the start of its newest endeavor, the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT).
The ANZPT will premiere in Adelaide, Australia, with a $3,000 AUD event on Feb. 4. Qualifiers are currently running on PokerStars with daily freerolls, as well as cash satellites, for as little as $8.80.
“Following the success of the APPT (Asia Pacific Poker Tour) earlier this year, we are excited to be expanding poker further throughout this region,” said Danny McDonagh, an ANZPT spokesperson. “The ANZPT will provide Australian and New Zealand poker players with a professionally executed tour in their own backyard.”
The ANZPT joins an increasing number of PokerStars-sponsored poker tours. Besides the APPT, the online poker site also features the popular European Poker Tour, the brand-new Russian Poker Tour, the growing Latin American Poker Tour, and the more modestly sized Filipino Poker Tour.
The ANZPT will be a league-based poker tour where players will earn points based on the number of tournaments they enter and what place they finish in each tournament. The first season will conclude this July.
Poker is hardly new to the region. Melbourne’s Aussie Millions (the main event of which is currently under way), widely regarded as one of poker’s premier tournament series, has been running since 1997.
But the game’s popularity definitely surged after Australia’s native son Joe Hachem won the WSOP main event in 2005. PokerStars’ more recent APPT events in Auckland and Sydney have attracted large crowds, and according to the online site, approximately 400,000 Australians regularly play the game.
Although a full 2009 schedule has yet to be released, there will be tournaments in up to six locations. PokerStars Team Australia members Tony Hachem, Grant Levy, Celina Lin, Erica Assadourian, and Emad Tahtouh are all expected to play in at least one of the events.
