Buss Rolls Over Opponent
L.A. Lakers owner Jerry Buss checked a flop of 875 and Tyler Isono bet 600. Buss made the call, and when the A hit on the turn Buss led out for 1,200. Isono made the call and both players checked the Q river. Buss turned over A6 for a pair of aces and Isono mucked. Buss climbed to around 13,000 with the pot.
Showing Up The Boys
2008 WSOP bracelet winner Svetlana Gromenkova raised preflop and was called by Eric Arreca. The flop came KJ2 and Gromenkova bet 600. Arreca made the call and both players checked the 6 turn. They again checked the 8 on the river and Arreca showed A-10 for an ace-high. Gromenkova looked as if she might be beat, but upon seeing his A-10 she flipped over A-Q. The queen played and Gromenkova scooped the pot with a better ace high.
Omaha 8
From Down Under To The Top
Joe Hachem bet the flop and river on a board of K105QJ and was called by Keith Sexton. Hachem showed AK72 and Sexton mucked. Hachem has climbed among the chip leaders with 39,000 in chips.
Razz
Hellmuth Has Arrived... And He's Already Upset
Phil Hellmuth started the hand off by smiling and asking John Juanda, "You got an 8 in the hole?" Juanda and Michael Baxley joined Hellmuth in the pot. The three players traded off betting, Juanda betting four street, Baxley betting fifth street and Hellmuth betting sixth street. Baxley bet the final card and Hellmuth made the call, but Juanda got out of the way. Their cards:
Hellmuth: 7968 (x-x-x)
Baxley: 4529(6A2)
Juanda: 62Q2 - Muck
Hellmuth clinched his fist and mucked, then began to talk about how bad players were in this tournament before telling Baxley in that Hellmuth-like tone, "Nice hit buddy." Even after the hand Hellmuth remained among the chip leaders.
Gromenkova Picks Off Jett
Gromenkova was also active in the razz round, narrowly taking a pot from Chip Jett. Their cards were:
Gromenkova: A-9-10-9 (6-5-2)
Jett: 7-8-9-5 (A-x-x)
Gromenkova showed 9-6-5-2-A for her low, and Jett could only shake his head as he showed 9-8-7-5-A for a worse 9-low.
Cunningham Bets Out Opponent
Allen Cunninghan called his opponent's bet on fourth street, then led out on fifth and again on sixth to make his opponent fold. Their cards were:
Cunningham: 23Q (X-X)
Opponent: 366-Muck

Big Hands:
Barry Shulman Sent Packing
The player in seat 2 raised the minimum to 1,600. Action folded around to Barry Shulman in the big blind who put in his remaning 3,500 into the pot. Seat 2 called and both players showed their hands.
Shulman: 66
Seat 2: KK
Board: AJ444
Shulman could not hit his two-outer and he was sent to the rail.
Hachem Gets Caught
The player in seat 6 raised to 2,200 and Joe Hachem made the call. The flop came Q84, followed by the 6 on the turn. Hachem fired 3,200 into a pot of around 6,000. Seat 6 made the call and the river was the 6. Hachem tried again, betting 8,500. His opponent wasn't going anywhere as he made the call, tabling QJ for two pair. Hachem slowly showed 97 for shattered dreams of an open ended straight gone awry. He was down to around 30,000.
He regained some of those chips when the player in seat 2 raised to 2,200 from early position. Hachem called, as did seat 6. The flop was 972 and everyone checked. On the turn, the Q dropped and Hachem fired 6,000. Both opponents mucked and Hachem was back up to around 36,000.
Other Business at Hand
Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss folded his hand and then had a question for someone on the rail.
"Who did we draft?" asked Buss, the NBA Draft winding down in New York.
He then picked himself up off his chair and walked over to the rail to find out the answer. For those of you who were curious, Buss' team took small forward Joe Crawford from the University of Kentucky with the 58th pick in the draft.

Play has ended for the day. Seat assignments are being redrawn, and cards will be in the air at 3 p.m. PST Thursday when the tournament continues.
Ante: 100
Bring In: 200
Limits: 500/1000
Players Left: 71 of 381
Chip Leaders:
Al Barbieri - 42,000
Mike Rocco - 42,000
Leo Torosyan - 35,000
Kim Erfly - 27,300
Chris Tryba - 22,000
Sabyl Landrum - 22,000
Chad Brown - 20,600
Bryan Devonshire - 20,200
Sam Grizzle - 19,800
Chip Jett - 18,800
Eliminations: Humberto Brenes, Eskimos Clarke.
Big Hands:
When You're Hot, You're Hot
Chad Brown, who survived an early all-in with an improbable set of quads on seventh street to beat another set of quads, has taken that momentum in amongst the chip leaders. Brown gathered another pot when he completed the bet to 500 with the 5, up against the original bring-in of seat 2, showing the 2. Each player committed another 500 on fourth street, and Brown was the caller of 1000 on sixth street, showing 5J10. He added the 3 on sixth street, and when action was checked to him, he bet another 1000 and drew a call. His opponent was showing AQ102. After seventh street, his opponent checked, as did Brown. The seat 2 player shrugged and said "I got nothing." Brown, likely to fold to a bet, managed to take down the pot with K75, a pair of fives good for the victory.
Mueller Takes a Hit
Greg Mueller completed to 500 with the K showing, and it didn't end there. The 6 made it 1000, the 10 went all-in for 1500, then Mueller raised to 2000 to bring the 6 player all-in. It resulted in just two players having chips to bet, and Mueller would come up short in a betting frenzy. Through sixth street Mueller showed KJ97, while his opponent for the sidepot showed 36AK. Another 1000 was bet after seventh street and Mueller showed wired queens before making his laydown. His opponent had A3 among his hole cards for two pair. The two all-ins fared better than Mueller, but not well enough, both making two pair but falling shy of the aces and threes.
Nguyen Can't Put it Away
Men Nguyen had the lead through fifth street showing AK6. His opponent was all-in after fifth street showing A102. But while Nguyen was calling for a spade with his final cards, his opponent revealed the AK, and the pair of aces held up as the winner.
Buss Still Hanging In
Jerry Buss limped for the bring-in with the J, and called when seat 6 completed with 3. All others folded. Buss drew the 10 on fourth street, which was enough to warrant a call, and he added the 2 on fifth street. His opponent, showing 39K, bet out for 1000 and Buss folded.
Two of the early chip leaders have fallen on hard times. John Hennigan had fallen to just 4500 in chips with 30 minutes remaining in the last level of the night, while Humberto Brenes has been eliminated.

Christopher McIntyre: 43,000
Dan Kalpakis: 39,000
Giacomo D'Agostino: 38,000
Joel Fischbein: 36,000
Daniel Studer: 36,000
Chad Brown: 36,000
Greg Pappas: 36,000
Big Hands:
Jett Flushed
Chip Jett, showing J655, raised the river bet of Stefan Rapp, who had a pair of tens to go along with KQ. Rapp thought for a long time before finally calling the 1,600. "Flush," announced Jett, flipping over K95. "You raised me with a flush?" fumed Rapp, who turned over the A and Q for queens up with a busted royal flush draw. Jett's up to nearly 50,000.
The Master Takes On The Sugar Bear
Al: 5649
Men: 8J53
After Men Nguyen led out on fifth street and Barbieri called, both players checked it down. "I got a jack with a spade flush draw without looking at the last card," said Men, who turned up...the J to make trip jacks. Barbieri mucked his hand.
The next hand Men raised to 1,600 with the 8 after an early position player completed and Barbieri three-bet to 2,400 with the 6. The action folded around to Men, who called.
Al: 8KJ2
Men: 6J610
Men led out on fourth street and Barbieri called; Barbieri led out on fifth street after he paired his six and Men called; then Men bet again after Barbieri checked to him; and both players checked the end. Barbieri showed the 6 for trip sixes and Men mucked.
After their little dance, Men was at about 18,000, and Barbieri 22,000.
Buss Dunked By Kobie
Jerry Buss was eliminated after he paired his king on sixth street but never improved against Kobie West's wired aces.
"It's ironic, isn't it," mused West after the hand. "Buss knocked out by Kobe."
Filippi In Blind
Amnon Filippi was doing an admirable job of hanging on the entire day, short stacked and clearly card dead, when he finally decided it was time to put his money in. Down to 700 and dealt the bring-in 3, Filippi decided to move his last chips in blind. He was called by the seat 1 player with the 5, and Men Nguyen raised to 1,600 with the 6 showing. Seat 1 called, but got out of the way a few streets later.
Filippi: 39104
Nguyen: 6A95
Originally all Men had was a pair of sixes, but he paired his nine on the end to give him nines up. Filippi turned up Q4 in the hole, giving him a ten or queen out to make him a higher two pair, but the J did not help his cause, and Filippi was eliminated in 59th place.

Jerry Buss Doubles Up
Mar 16, '08
A player limps under the gun, as does a player in middle position. Jerry Buss raises to 800 and the blinds and the under the gun player fold. The middle position player puts Buss all in for his last 2,000 or so and Buss calls, showing 1010. His opponent shows KK and the board comes 1053A9 to give Buss the suckout and the double up. He now has about 5,600 in his stack.
