Always a Comedian
Brad Garrett's comedy act at table 8 continues.  In one hand the board showed AQ29, a player in seat six checked and Garrett moved all in.  As the cameras and media gathered, the deaerl instructed Garrett to move a stack into the middle of the table.  Garrett asked, "Just one stack?"  then went to his neighbors chips and gestured as if he was going to move them in.  Everyone had a laugh except seat six, who dejectedly mucked.

Nightmare Situation

Brandon Adams found himself in nightmare situation preflop, getting all of his money in with K K against A A.   The flop of Q 9 6 improved neither player and things where looking even more dire for Adams.  The turn completely flipped the situation when it brought the K giving Adams a dominating lead and leaving his opponent with only a 5% chance of winning the hand.  The J on  the river sealed Adam's victory and doubled him up to just over $50,000.  

Molina Busts

 Eric Molina, who got a lot of attention from camera crews at last years main event, will no grace the small screen for long in this years coverage.  Molina was eliminated this past hour, and against precedent he left quietly and quickly after busting.

Ian Johns Eliminated

A player limped in early position and the cutoff limped behind as well.  Ian Johns raised to $2,000 from the button.  The early position player then asked Johns how much he had behind which was about $11,000.  With this information he decided to just flat call, as did the cutoff.  The flop came J 5 4 and the cutoff bet out $3,000.  Johns raised all in and the cutoff made the call, showing 5 4. Johns reluctantly turned over the A J and needed help.  The turn and river came 2 4, giving the cutoff an unnecessary full house and eliminating Johns. 

SPA Doubles
Team Pokerstars member Steve Paul Ambrose (SPA to his friends and fanboys) has doubled up.  He pushed AQ from middle position and was called by 87 from the big blind.  The Board came A22510, doubling him up to $7,000.

Preflop Posturing
Mark Vos raised to $1,350, he was called by a player in seat nine and raised by the big blind to $2,400.  Vos reraised to $20,300 and the big blind  over $50,000 more. Vos thought then folded.  He asked the big blind to show one card, and he tabled the A.

Official Numbers

Just following the dinner break the tournament officials announced the final numbers for the day.  A total of 1,287 players began the day, and there are about 850 remaining.  We will have wait and see how the other "Day Ones" stack up to this one.

Don't Want To Be Embarassed

Dustin Woolf used the attention his chipstack has gotten him.  Woolf, with over $80,000 in chips, has been sought out by the ESPN cameras recently, and he prompted an opponent to fold in their presence.  A player raised from middle position and Woolf defended from the big blind.  The flop was J 8 7, Woolf bet $2,100, and his opponent began to think.  Woolf then said "You know this is gonna be on ESPN," grinning.  His opponent folded and he raked in the pot.

Redrawn

In our Pro Blogs section Barry Greenstein has talked about the passivity of his table up to this point.  Recently his table was upgraded when Brandon Adams was moved there.  Greenstein needled him as he sat, "We asked for the worst player from your table, are you sure you want to own up to that?"  Adams simply smiled and took his seat.

Jacob  and Wahlroos Filled Out

Alex Jacob was knocked out when he made a full house with pocket fives only to run into his opponent's King's full.  Jacob and his no longer magic hair have been eliminated from the Main Event.  Thomas Wahlroos also ran into a full house to end his day.  Wahlroos raised to $3,000 and the player in seat 7 called.  The flop was 9 8 3, Seat 7 checked, Wahlroos moved all in, and Seat 7 called.  Wahlroos held Q Q, but his opponent had outflopped him with 9 9.  The turn was the 8 and the river the K, and Wahroos hit the rail.

Ma Outdrawn

Tony Ma, representative of www.PokerStars.com, raised to $1,600 from the button, the big blind moves all in for $1,150 more and Ma calls.  Ma holds A J against the big blind's A 4.  The flop Q 7 5 kept Ma in the lead, but the turn and river were the K and the 8, giving the big blind a runner-runner flush.

Big Shoes

Nolan Dalla just announced over the microphone that the first player to break $100,000 in chips (he actually has $120,000)  is Tinton Oliver.  A few players let out a few boos, but they should cheer up.  Its a kiss of death to be chip leader early in the Main Event.  Just ask Barry Greenstein about having that distinction in 2003, or better yet does anyone remember Dimitri Nobles?

Hour Two

Many top professionals remained in the hunt for their first world championship bracelet, while a few remained in the hunt for their second as hour two transpired.

The Contenders

Among the first-time hopefuls were Mihn Ly, Jimmy Tran, Jeff Madsen, Dustin Woolf, Chris Viox, Can Kim Hua, Kenny Tran, Brandon Adams, Brad Garrett, Barry Greenstein, Tom Schneider, David “The Dragon” Pham, Steve Sung, Mark Seif, Patrik Antonius, Bruno Fitoussi, Jared Hamby, David Levi, Cliff Josephy, Paul Wasicka, Kirk Morrison, Robert Mizrachi, and “Miami” John Cernuto, who is seated at the featured table. Young stars, Joe Sebok and Evelyn Ng were seated together at table 17. While James Van Alstyne and Sabyl Cohen were seated together at table 67, Cohen was the last woman standing in the 2006 main event.

The Champions

There were also a number of former world champions left in the field. Two of them, Scotty Nguyen and Berry Johnston, were among the chip leaders by the end of the hour. While Huck Seed, Dan Harrington, and team www.pokerstars.com member Tom McEvoy also held strong.

On a flop of Q 10 4 Brandon Adams bet $2,000 from the button and his opponent called in small blind. The turn brought the 10 and the small blind led out for $5,000. Adams raised to $14,000 and his opponent made the call. The river peeled yet another 10 off the deck, this time the 10. The small blind cheked and Adams peered at his remaining stack. As Adams counted out the $25,000 that was left in front of his opponent, the small blind said, “Two hundred and eighteen thousand,” with a laugh escaping his lips and a grin spread across his face. Adams bet $5,000 and his opponent raised to $14,000. Adams made the call and flipped over Q 3. His opponent turned over Q 10 for quad tens, and he took down the pot.

Killing Time

The 15 hour days of the main event can turn into quite a grind. One player found a chance to catch up on his reading in between hands of poker though. He pulled out a copy of a Brad Meltzer novel and intently indulged himself into the story. He didn’t even happen to notice the ESPN camera peering over his shoulder to read along with him.

Gus Makes a Move, Runs Into Monsters
Seat one raises to $48,000, Tuan Lam calls, and Gus Hanson makes the call.  The flop comes 10108, Seat one checks, Lam checks and Hanson bets $110,000.  Seat one moves all in, and Lam makes the call.  Hanson looks suprised, then mucks his cards.  Seat one has a stack that almost reaches $1,000,000, but Lam has him covered.  Seat one tables 109, but is in serious trouble when Lam rolls over 88 for the full house.  The next two cards come K2, and seat one is eliminated while Lam cracks the $2,000,000 mark.

Hanson Strikes Back
It is folded to Tuan Lam and he raises to $50,000 from the cutoff.  Gus Hanson decideds to defend his big blind, and reraises to $148,000.  Lam reraises all in, and Hanson goes deep into the tank.  He is surrounded by ESPN cameras as he thinks.  He finally makes the call for his last $690,000, and shows down 1010.  Lam tables QQ, and Hanson is a huge dog.  The flop comes K108, and Hanson spikes his two outer.  The next two cards come 53, and Hanson doubles up.  All he could say was, "Sick, so so sick."
Brandon Adams Not Backing Down

Seat No. 1 raises to $48,000 and Adams immediately makes it $200,000 to go.  Bill Edler is in the big blind and takes a long while before slowly mucking his cards.  Seat No. 1 thinks for a bit before also folding.  Very quietly and without showing down a hand, Brandon Adams has increased his stack to $1,380,000.

Isaac Haxton Picks On John Bird

John Bird limps from middle position and Isaac Haxton limps from the cutoff as well.  The big blind checks his option and the three players see a 9 5 3 flop.  Bird bets $40,000 and only Haxton makes the call.  The turn is the 3 and both players quickly check.  The river is the Q and Bird checks.  Haxton sits still for a few moments before announcing a bet of $100,000.  Bird goes into the tank, agonizing over his decision.  Eventually Bird says, "Will you show me if I fold?"  Haxton stays quiet for about thirty seconds and then says, "I guess."  Bird makes the call and Haxton shows A 4 for the nut flush.  After the hand, Haxton says, "Well that worked well enough." 

The very next hand on a board of A J 3 Q Bird bets $100,000 and Haxton calls.  The A hits the river and Bird quickly checks.  Haxton bets $175,000 and Bird mucks, clearly frustrated. 

Alaei and Hamby Win Without Showdown

Daniel Alaei and Jared Hamby both won some sizable pots this level without showdown.  Alaei raised to $44,000 and Diego Cordovez called.  The flop brought the A Q 6 and Cordovez quickly checked.  Alaei bet $64,000 after careful  consideration and Cordovez folded.  Alaei picked up another big pot before the flop when he once again raised just short of three times the big blind and a deep stacked player small blind reraised to $120,000.  After a moment Alaei quietly announced all-in.  His opponent folded and Alaei took another big pot down.  Player of the year contender Jared Hamby picked up $42,000 each from three opponents with an all-in raise preflop.   Winning pots without contest is always favorable.  As Bill Edler told a Cardplayer.com reporter, "It's good work if you can find it."

Main Event Update

Josh Evans Eliminated 76th

Evans moves all with A6 and is called by Pokerstars qualifier Jason Welsh with A10.   The board comes KJ8J9, making Welsh the nut flush and sending Evans home in 76th place.

Scott Freeman Wins Huge Pot

Avi Cohen limps from early position and Freeman raises to $100,000.  Cohen makes the call and the flop comes K96.  Cohen checks and Freeman bets $175,000.  Cohen thinks then makes the call.  The turn is the 10 and Cohen leads for $400,000.  Freeman reraises all in for around $1,010,000, and Cohen quickly makes the call with 87.  Freeman rolls over 86, and is drawing to a backdoor flush to stay alive.  As the ESPN cameras crown the table, Freeman mouths, "one time" then looks up into the roof of the Amazon Room.  The river brings the 5, making Freeman's flush and shipping him a pot worth over $2,500,000 in chips. 

The Great Dane Doubles Up... Without Showdown

Within one orbit Gus Hansen moved in four times and  picked up at least $81,000 each time without even seeing a flop.  He moved in from the small blind, the button, the cutoff and later from early position, and increased his stack from around $400,000  to nearly $800,000 in that orbit.  When Hansen finally saw a flop from the small blind the board came down A A A and Gus was bet out of the pot.  Hansen was still by far ahead of were he started the orbit, and it seems that his putting the pressure on his opponents has so far worked in his favor.

The final table bubble has burst and there are only nine players remaining. Erick Lindgren was the unfortunate player to finish in 10th place, just missing what would have been his second final table of the 2007 World Series of Poker.

Qushqar Morad raised preflop and Lindgren called from the big blind. The flop came 6 4 2 and Lindgren bet out. Morad raised enough to put Lindgren all in and Lindgren made the call. Lindgren showed 10-10-7-5 and Morad was in the lead with Q-Q-7-5. The turn brought an ace and the river was a two, eliminating Lindgren and squandering his ongoing quest for his first World Series of Poker bracelet.

The following nine players will return tomorrow at 3 p.m. to battle down to a winner.

Double Ups and Elimination Abound

The first hour of Omaha action saw a number of double ups and a handful of eliminations. At the end of the hour Chau Giang and Brandon Adams still remained in the hunt for a bracelet. Alan Smurfit, Van Marcus, and Sunny Nijran were among those to double up quickly, but not in all cases did they survive.

Hilbert Shirey Eliminated in Ninth Place ($30,317)

On the second hand of the final table Hilbert Shirey was the first player to make his exit. He was discarded by the set of kings that Qushqar Morad possessed. Shirey was eliminated in ninth place and took home $30,317 in prize money.

Sunny Nijran Eliminated in Eighth Place ($42,108)

It was 20 hands later that Sunny Nijran had moved all in and once again Morad had an opponent covered. This time a six-high straight was the fatal blow that Morad owned. Nijran was sent to the rail in eighth place, and took home $42,108 in prize money.

Robert Fellner Eliminated in Seventh Place ($57,266)

Robert Fellner was covered by Chau Giang preflop. Giang flipped over Q J 9 8, while Fellner turned up K Q 9 8. The board was dealt A K 2 10 4. Giang held the correct two pieces for the straight, jigsaw puzzle and he eliminated Fellner in seventh place on the hand. Fellner walked away with $57,266 in prize money.

Rest Stop

After Fellner was eliminated the players went on a short bathroom break for five minutes and then the final six players returned to the table.

Hour One Recap

The beginning of Event 21was delayed half an hour, finally getting underway at 12:30 p.m.  900 players entered the event, garnering a $1,220,500 prize pool.  For winning their first table, players will receive $6,757.  If they go all the way to the end, first place pays $254,107. David Pham, who won the no-limit shootout last year did indeed return to defend his title, but with Joe Tehan seated at his table it certainly won't be a walk getting through even the first round.

Stacked tables are always a factor in a players performance. If you get a bad draw and are stuck with tough pros, it obviously has an effect.  In this tournament that effect is especially large, however, because there is no balancing or breaking of tables. Also, you can't just avoid a pro because you have to take out everyone at you're table to win. For these reasons, the players who got stuck with the pros at the following stacked tables are especially unlucky.

Some early eliminations include Max Pescatori, Joe Tehan, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi and David "Devilfish" Ulliot.  Tehan was eliminated  when he  got all in heads up with last year's winner David "The Dragon " Pham.  Pham  bet out  $175 before the flop and Tehan raised it $550.  Pham  called and the flop came 9 5 2. Pham checked and Tehan bet out $625. Phan raised him to $1,725 and Tehan pushed all in. Pham called and showed 6 3 for the straight flush draw and Tehan turned over A A. The turn brought the 10 and the river was the 9.

Mizrachi wasted no time in the first level establishing himself as the most aggressive player at his very stacked table. Mizrachi raised every bet for the first half hour and the players at his table were waiting to catch him at the wrong moment. After consecutive raises, Mark Seif said to Mizrachi, "God, you gonna raise every pot?" The Grinder responded, "how else am I gonna bust you guys if I dont raise? I only got two hours to bust all you guys, I gotta play in the other tourney coming back at two." Mizrachi's aggressive play finally caught up to him when the player in seat four took a stand. Mizrachi limped into the pot and the player in seat four bet out $475. Mizrachi was the only caller and the flop came J 7 6. Mizrachi pushed all in for not many chips and the player in seat four instantly called. The Grinder turned over 8 6 and the player in seat four had Q Q. The 5 hit on the turn and gave Mizrachi a handful of more outs. The river was the A and Mizrachi was eliminated just in time to take his seat in the other tournament.

Chau Giang got involved in a rollercoaster of a pot. After a flop of K 5 5, Giang's opponent bet $1,200.  Giang raised all in, and after going into the tank for a minute, his opponent called.  Giang revealed the 8 5 for trips with an eight kicker.  His opponent also had trips with the 6 5, but with a smaller kicked he was trailing Giang. The 6 on the turn prompted a gasp from the table, as the three outer had filled up Giang's opponent and put him in the lead.  Giang needed an eight or a king on the river to survive. When the 8 hit the board, everyone at the table gasped again as Giang hit a higher full house to double up and survive. A player at the table then noted, "That would've been a great all-in moment."

The Devilfish Splashes and The Bubble Bursts

Out of the 145 entrants, only 21 players remain.  Those still in contention returned from an hour and a half dinner break, and play took off at a breakneck pace. David “Devilfish” Ulliot was, using his own words, “ready for war.” He folded one hand out of the first eight or so, and after the dust settled he had increased his chips to roughly $850,000. After losing the first hand back from dinner and being down to $140,000, he came back to not only eliminated the 21^st place player, Danny Fuhs, but he also to take a huge chunk out of Andrew Black. Ulliot caught a straight with the A  on the river, and went all in for only a few tens of thousands more after Black bet the pot. Black did release his hand, knowing he was beat, but he still took a massive loss in the hand.

Ben Grundy was eliminated in 20^th place, and hand for hand began until one more player was eliminated.  This only took a short while, as a drastically short-stacked Brandon Adams moved in from early position after a flop of J52. Andrew Black called with the AJ108.  Adams' 9943 was behind, needing a nine, six or ace to take the lead. The turn and river bricked off, however, and the disappointed Adams officially became the bubble boy.  All the remaining players have converged on the final two tables, and was guaranteed to make at least $31,801.

Chau Giang was the first to bust in the money, in 18th place ($31,801,) when his pair of aces on the flop ran into Mike Sexton's set of ducks.
