Johnny-Friggin-Chan Doubles Up
Things just got dangerous for players in day 1c.
Johnny Chan was in a large pot with the flop showing 108J when he bet and his opponent moved all in. Chan called and his opponent saw he had only one out. Their hands:
Chan: 1010
Opponent: 88
Chan had the better flopped set, and the Q turn and K river gave the Orient Express an early double up to 60,000.
Savage Off to Good Start
On a board of 106654 Matt Savage bet 2,000 and his opponent made the call. Savage showed 44 for a full house to take down an early pot and expand his stack to 35,000.
The Early Chip Leader?
Phil Armstrong got all in on a fop of 682 holding a flopped set of eights. His opponent, naturally, had pocket aces and was eliminated when the K turn and 9 river didn’t connect with his hand.
It seems we have an early chip leader, as Armstrong doubled to 60,000.
Sowers Loses Massive One
On a board of 8Q49J Mike Sowers bet 3,000 and his opponent raised to 18,000. Sowers made the call and his opponent showed K10 for the rivered straight.
Sowers saw his stack drop to 10,000.
Leonor Margets Wins a Pot
Two players limped in for 100 and Margets made it 450 with the A10. The blinds folded and so did one of the limpers. The other one called and the flop came Q103 and action went check-check. The turn brought the 3 and Margets’ opponent checked. Margets bet 575 and her opponent called. The turn brought the 9 and action went check-check. Margets’ opponent tabled pocket fives and she exposed her pair of tens. Margets took the pot.

Eliminations: Dario Minieri, Todd Brunson, Shane Schleger, Cyndy Violette, Michael Mizrachi
Big Hands:
The Ladies Hold Cunningham... errr, Hold FOR Cunningham
The player in seat 4 raised to 1,200 from early position and Allen Cunningham made the call from the cutoff. The flop came down 964 and seat 4 fired 2,600. Cunningham quickly called and the turn was the 10. Seat 4 slowed down, checking to his opponent. Cunningham kept his foot on the gas and fired 5,000 into the pot. Seat 4 made the call and the river was the 2. Seat 4 checked and Cunningham took time to think about whether he could get any value out of a final bet. He decided he couldn't and checked as well. Seat 4 showed down JJ for an overpair. Cunningham showed an overpair of his own, QQ, and raked in the pot. He was at 80,000 after the hand.
Brunson Busts
Todd Brunson's tournament came to an end when his 56 ran into his opponent's nut flush with AJ on the turn of a board reading 6426. Brunson failed to improve on the river, which brought the A and the end of the Brunson's 2008 WSOP.
El Matador Gored... Slightly
On a board of Q10545, Carlos Mortensen made a 4,000 bet on the river and the player in seat 3 looked him up. Mortensen rolled his eyes and threw his hand into the muck. Seat 3 raked the pot, but failed to make a significant dent in Mortensen's growing stack. After the hand, Mortensen still had well over 120,000 in chips.
Bernard Lee Gets Bluffed Out?
Heads-up and on a board of 1093K5, Bernard Lee bet 7,700 on the river. His opponent in seat 7 thought for a minute before asking Lee how much he had left. Lee did a quick count replying, "A little under 11,000." Seat 7 moved all in and a short stacked Lee folded the hand after a minute or so in the tank. Seat 7 showed 88 as he raked the pot, Lee looked a little thrown off. Seat 7 said, "I wouldn't have done that, but you checked the king on the turn, so I knew you didn't have it." Lee shook his head and shrugged it off, down to 11,000 in chips.
Phil Gordon Can't Stand It
Gordon raised preflop to 1,025 from middle position and the player in seat 2 called from the cutoff. The flop came down QQJ and Gordon checked. Seat 2 fired 1,000 and Gordon quickly called. The turn was the 3 and Gordon checked again. Seat 2 fired 2,500 into the pot this time and Gordon quickly called again. The river was the 8 and Gordon checked one more time. Seat 2 fired 5,000 into the 9,050 pot. Gordon quickly called and seat 2 showed down KQ and Gordon shot out of his chair, a disgusted groan coming out of him. He took a short walk away from the table as his hand was placed in the muck. He was down to 35,000 in chips.
Matt Savage Knocks One Out On River
The player in seat 1 moved all in before the flop and Matt Savage made the call. Savage had him covered and both players turned over their cards.
Savage: A6
Seat 1: AQ
Board: Q7584
Matt Savage was way behind before the flop, his opponent making top pair on the flop and all but reducing Savage to going runner-runner. The 8 on the turn gave savage the open-ended straight draw, and the 4 on the river locked it up. Savage sucked out to make the eight-high straight, eliminating his opponent and bringing his stack up to 45,000 after the hand.
Men "The Master"...Not So Much
The player in seat 7 raised to 1,200 from the cutoff and Men "The Master" Nguyen reraised to 4,000 from the big blind. Seat 7 called and the flop came 765. Nguyen fired out 6,000 and seat 7 made the call. The turn was a scare card (2) and both players checked around. The river was another scare card (8), and Nguyen went into the tank for nearly three minutes on his own action. Finally Nguyen checked to to his opponent who rapped the table as well. Seat 7 said, "How big is your pair?" as he turned over A5 for a pair of fives. Nguyen said, "Fives are good man" as he threw his cards into the muck. Nguyen lost more than half of his stack that hand, now down to just 9,000 in chips.
Ramdin Pushed Out, So What?
Victor Ramdin raised to 1,200 from middle position and the player in seat 8 made the call from the small blind. The flop came down 1043. Ramdin continued with the aggression as he fired 2,000 into the pot. The small blind had enough of that nonsense, however, and he came over the top with 3,000 more. Ramdin mucked his hand, but was still left with a healthy 93,000 in chips.
Some More Magic
The player in seat 6 raised to 2,400 from middle position and action folded to Antonio Esfaniari on the button. "How much do you have left," Esfandiari asked his opponent. After getting his answer (approx. 24,000), Esfandiari made the call and the flop came down 1084. Seat 6 checked and Esfandiari applied the pressure with a bet of 4,600. Seat 6 liked the 24,000 he had left and decided not to put any more of it at risk as he mucked his hand. Esfandiari took the pot and was around 88,000 after the hand.
Dario's Day Over
Dario Minieri raised against one middle position limper to 1,600 from the small blind. The limper called, and also called Dario's bet of 2,300 on the flop of 722. The turn was the 10, and the Italian Harry Potter shoved for his remaining 7,500. His opponent called once again, and was in bad shape holding A10 against Minieri's QQ. But the river brought an unfortunate 10, sending the bracelet winner to the rail early in the last level of the night.

Average Stack: 12,786
Eliminations: Mike Matusow, Berry Johnston, Allen Kessler, Matt Savage, Paul Magriel, Matt Savage
Big Hands:
One Potentially Loud Table
One table in particular seems more made for TV than random. It features three players who are known for what comes out of their mouths - Mike Matusow, Men Nguyen and Josh Arieh.
So far, Nguyen has done the most damage. One three-way hand brought a board of 86272. When the betting was said and done, Nguyen showed K965 for the flush and his opponents split the low pot with the same hands - A763 and A1073.
Ariah and Nguyen tangled a few times early with the same results. In one hand, Nguyen raised preflop and Arieh and two other players called. The flop came AAJ, Nguyen bet out and everyone folded immediately.
Another hand had Arieh limping from the button, Nguyen raising from the big blind and Arieh calling. The flop came out K-J-X and Nguyen tossed some chips into the pot. Arieh's cards hit the muck immediately and Nguyen flashed two aces before raking in the pot. Nguyen ends the day with around 26,000 in chips.
The table was later joined by Barry Greenstein, who though not as loud as his new company, can still say some pretty entertaining things.... LOL Donkaments.
Muzzled
A short stacked Mike Matusow got his remaining 800 all in preflop and was called by 6 players. The board came QJ952, and after the player in seat 7 bet out the rest of the players he showed AKQ10 for a straight. Matusow showed KQ76 and headed for the door.
On his way out, a dissapointed Matusow said, "Two hours and 37 minutes without winning a pot and another day of outlasting two-thirds of the field for nothing."
Grinder One-Outered
Michael Mizrachi was short stacked and needed to get something going quick. He got the remainder of his chips all in as the board came K8363. Mizrachi's opponent showed 3-3 in his hand for quads and Mizrachi looked at his cards and muttered, "I got one outered," then mucked.
Matt Savage Eliminated
Down to his last 400 chips, Matt Savage raised all in for 400 from the cutoff and the small blind reraised to 1,000. The big blind called the raise as did the player in seat 8. The flop came A92, and seat 8 bet 500. The small blind called and the big blind folded. The turn was the 8 and seat 8 bet 1,000, the small blind called. The river was the 4 and seat 8 bet 1,000. this time the small blind folded and before Savage could even turn up his cards for the main pot, seat 8 turned over the wheel (AK53) to scoop the pot. So just like that, everyone's favorite tournament director hit the rail.

Big Hands:
Boyd Loses a Big Pot
Dutch Body raised to 600 preflop and was called the player in seat 1 and seat 7. The flop came J63 and seat 1 immediately bet out 300. Both Boyd and seat 7 called and the turn brought the K. Seat 1 checked this time, Boyd bet out 600 and seat 7 re-raised to 1,200. Seat 1 called and Boyd raised it yet again up to 1,800. Everyone called and the 2 came on the river. This time, seat 1 bet out and was called by Boyd and seat 7. Seat 1 showed A-7-5-4 for a rivered straight and the nut low, and neither Boyd or seat 7 showed before they mucked their cards. After not taking any part of the big pot, Body's stack was under 4,000.
Matt Savage Scoops With the Wheel
On a flop of Q53, beloved tournament director Matt Savage bet 200 and both the players in seat 8 & 9 made the call. The turn was the J and and once again Savage bet 200. Seat 8 called and seat 9 raised to 400. Savage called the raise as did seat 8. The river was the 4 and everyone checked around. Savage missed a bet on the river looking for a check-raise as he turned over AQ32 for the wheel, scooping the pot with both the high hand and the low hand.
Mark Gregorich Eliminated
After facing near elimination on the previous hand, Mark Gregorich sat back down after winning a 125 piece of the side pot. The very next hand and Gregorich was all in for 125 in a five-way pot. All four players to his left in seats 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 called the 200 blind bet. The flop came 643, and seat 4 bet 200, seat 5 called while both seat 2 and seat 3 folded. The turn was the K and seat 4 bet 400. Seat 5 called and the river was the 4. Both players checked and turned their hands over.
Seat 4: KK108
Seat 5: AQJ2
Seat 4 made a set of kings on the turn and a full house on the river for the high hand while seat 5 made the 6-4-3-2-A for the low hand. Seats 4 and 5 split the pot while Mark Gregorich threw his hand into the muck.
