Hours Away From Stud Hi-Low
Jun 25, '08
The $1,500 buy-in seven-card stud high-low event is hours away. The buy increased from $1,000 a year ago to $1,500 this year.
Last year, a total of 668 players filled the Rio's Amazon Room for some seven-card mayhem. The prize pool totaled $607,880. Tom Schneider took home the bracelet on his way to the 2007 World Series of Poker Player of the Year title. He also netted himself a nice payday of $147,713. He topped a final table that included Scotty Nguyen and Tony Ma.
Players will begin with 3,000 in chips. There will be a 20-minute break after every two levels and players will get a 30-minute break after level 4. Play will stop at the conclusion of level 8. The remaining players will return at 3 p.m. Friday for Day 2.

$2,500 2-7 Triple Draw - Level One Recap
Jun 22, '08

Limits: 50-100
Players Registered So Far: 194
Notable Names in the Field:
Daniel Negreanu
Jeff Lisandro
Grag Raymer
John Juanda
Scotty Nguyen
Gavin Smith
Hands and Storylines:
Raymer Gets There on Second Draw
Greg Raymer, Davidson Matthew and two other players all check after the first draw. Three of the players took two cards again, while the player in the big blind, drew four cards instead of three. Raymer joked that there must be nothing but low cards left in the deck, and then bet out and got one caller. Raymer stood pat and then bet out again and was called. He showed 9-6-4-3-2 and took down the pot.
Bellande and Filippi Talk Prop Bets
Jean-Robert Bellande and Amnon Filippi seem to be bit bored and have been going back and forth all level. At one point they were discussing their recent tournaments, and then debated when the first player would be eliminated. Bellande wanted to bet that nobody would go out in the first level, while Filippi said a player would be out by the first break, which is after the second level. A couple minutes later they still had not broken their stalemate.
Negreanu Takes Two Down
Daniel Negreanu stood pat and bet out after every draw and took down the pot when his opponent folded, then one the following hand with a 10-7 high.
Archie Karas Takes Down a Multi-Way Pot With the Nuts
Men Nguyen limped in for 50, Archie Karas raised to 100, and Tom Schneider reraised to 150. Both Nguyen and Karas called the raise. Karas and Schneider each drew one card on the first draw while Nguyen stood pat. Nguyen bet 100 and they both called. On the next draw, all three of them stood pat, this time Karas bet 100 and everyone called. The same thing happened on the third draw, and Karas showed the nuts (2-3-4-5-7). Karas raked the pot.

Big Hands:
Only Jesus...
Most of the buzz around the room has been about Chris "Jesus" Ferguson. He came into the day as the tournament's short stack with just 3,300.
So what had Mike "the Mouth" Matusow yelling (or just normal talk for Matusow?) that Ferguson would be chip leader before long? Ferguson chipped all the way up to 25,000 in the first half of the level.
"How much is an autograph going for?" Matusow joked with Ferguson. "I'll give you mine for free if you give me yours for 50."
Negreanu Bid Farewell
Daniel Negreanu chopped a pot with Jennifer Harman when the board ran K-7-2-A-4 and Negreanu showed A-J-10-7 for the best two pair, and Harman showed A-9-6-4 for the 7-low.
One hand later Negreanu was all in and his chances weren't as good, up against Hasan Habib, Men "The Master" Nguyen and Jennifer Harman. The flop came 10 8 7 and Habib checked to Nyguen, who bet 1,500. Harman and Habib called and the turn brought the 6 . All players put in another 3,000 to see the river J . Habib put his remaining 800 in and Nguyen put out a bet of 3,000 that was called by Harman.
Nguyen showed 3 2 4 2 for a flush and Habib showed A 2 5 5 for the low. Harman mucked and Negreanu was eliminated.
Goodwin Takes The Enitre Pot
Marc Goodwin called James DiGiorgio's bets on every street on a board of K-8-7-Q-Q and flipped over A-A-Q-2. DiGiorgio showed a king and mucked, and Goodwin climbed toward 20,000.
The Matadore Double
Carlos Mortensen started the day with 7,400 in chips but recently doubled to around 18,000 when he got all in preflop and the board came 9 8 2 Q Q . Mortenson showed A-8-7-3, which was good enough to take the pot.
A Jesus-Like Tale
Tom Schneider has also had a Jesus-like resurrection, starting the day with just 4,400 and climbing up to around 25,000. However, Schneider just took a hit when he called an opponent all the way then raised on the river. As soon as his opponent called Schneider said, "You got it. I missed everything," and mucked. His opponent showed 10 9 for a full house. Schneider fell to around 20,000.
A Pretty Big Hand
Brad Booth bet out on a board of 5 2 2 9 and Jeff Madsen let his hand go. Booth then said, "A pretty big hand..." and showed A-2-3-K for a set of deuces and the nut low draw.
Fashionably Late
David Benyamine just sat down at Mike Matusow's table halfway through the level. Matusow, who has been singing and chatting away, said he wasn't sure if Benyamine was going to show up today.

$5000 Stud 8 or Better - Level 3
Jun 17, '08
Ante: 50
Bring In: 50
Limits: 200/400
Players Entered: 261
Big Hands:
Booth Can't Connect
Brad "Yukon" Booth was part of four-way action after the initial round of betting, showing the K . After the initial bring-in was raised to 200, Booth wento to 400, then had the player in seat 2 reraise to 600, showing the 5 . Booth called and received the Q while his opponent received the 9 . They continued to bet through sixth street, Booth eventually with K Q J 7 . After the final card was dealt, Booth bet 600 and was again raised to 1200. His opponent was showing 9 8 7 5 . Booth called, and learned his opponent had the 6 in the hole for a straight, and Booth mucked.
Lederer and Williamson III Chop
Four players played for 200, and on fourth street Robert Williamson III took the lead with 6 6 up. Howard Lederer was showing A 9 . The two other players called again and Williamson III was dealt a third six, the 6 . Lederer drew the 2 and the two players were suddenly heads-up. Williamson III added the 5 , Lederer the 7 , and in the end they chopped with Williamson's trips good for high.
Todd Brunson Take it Down
It appeared that both Todd Brunson and Chris Ferguson were on low draws through fourth street. Brunson opened with the A 2 while Ferguson had 2 3 showing. Brunson added the 8 on fifth street while Ferguson had the J . Both added another 400 to the pot, and Brunson was dealt the 3 to increase his low chances. Ferguson was counterfeited with the 2 and made the fold.
Schneider Takes a Hit
Tom Schneider opened things to 200 and was raised by seat 7 to 400 before calling. After fourth street Schneider showed K A while his opponent held A 5 . Schneider continued to call after getting the 8 on fifth street, and his opponent the 7 . Sixth street didn't appear to help Schneider, getting the 3 while his opponent added the 8 . But Schneider called a seventh street bet as well, to see his opponent held 4 3 2 in the hole for the A-5 straight.
There are a number of tough tables in the field, but table 25 may be the toughest with Todd Brunson, Eric Seidel, Erick Lindgren and Chris Ferguson all present.

Levi Lays it Down, Short on Chips but Battles Back
In a three-way pot with John Juanda and the player in seat 2, David Levi called seat 2's bet on 4th and 5th street but Juanda folded. Levi and seat 2 checked 6th street, but when seat 2 bet 1,000 on the end Levi stood from his seat and looked sick. He showed his hand and asked, "Nine-low no good?" to which his opponent shook his head. Their cards were:
Seat 2: A J 4 8 (X-X-X)
Levi: 3 7 9 4 (5 4 -X)
Juanda: A 9 -Fold-
Levi lost the hand, but he battled back to end the level with a healthy stack of over 20,000.
Bracelet Winners Collide
Tom Schnedier and Jeff Lisandro were heads up with Schneider betting on every street. Schneider bet 1,000 one more time after the final card was dealt to each player, but Lisandro mucked his hand. Their cards were:

Seat 2 showed a 7-low and Juanda mucked his cards.

The 2007 defending champion Katja Thater was all in against a single opponent.
Thater: Q 2 A 6 2 3 Q
Seat 8: 4 3 5 9 A 9 K
On 5th street seat 8 had locked up a nine-low and Thater was drawing very slim. Sixth street gave her new life where she could hit a 4, 5, 7, or 8 to stay alive as long as her opponent didn't improve. On the river, she paired her queen and the defending champion was defending no more.

Tom Schneider Packs His Bag
Schneider: (8-3-10)-A-Q-7-8
Archie Karas: (A-3-5)-4-4-10-2
Tom Schneider was all in for his short stack against Karas. The money was all in on 5th street and Schneider was looking to improve his queen-low against Karas' 10-low draw. Sixth street made Karas his 10-low and paired Schneider. The river gave Karas the wheel which Schneider rode to the rail, his backpack in hand.

Barry Greenstein put Stephen Ladowsky all in on 5th street and here is how their boards ran out.
Greenstein: (3-8)-5-5-J-Q-(A)

Opponent: (A-3-8)-4-4-7-Q
Tom Schneider bet every street. His opponent called him down and the river sunk Schneider as his opponent received an 8-low, enough to suck out on Schneider's 10-low. His stack was at 40,000 and would go lower a few hands later.
Schneider: (x-x)-9-K-A-10
Opponent: (x-x)10-2-6-8
Schneider called his opponent's bets on all the way down to 6th street. After his opponent hit an 8 on 6th street, Schneider tanked after he was bet at and finally laid his hand down, leaving his stack just around 25,000.
Robin Hood Puts an Arrow In Brown
Andrew Brown was all in on 6th street and Barry Greenstein called him. Greenstein showed Brown the bad news with a 6-low, trouncing Brown's 9-low. Brown was eliminated and asked Greenstein if Brown could sign Greenstein's book. "Robin Hood" informed Brown that he had it backwards. Only those who knock out Greenstein may receive an autographed copy of "Ace on the River." Greenstein was at 170,000 after the hand.

Ted Lawson Takes One From Robin Hood
Lawson: (A-8)-7-7-K-Q-X
Barry Greenstein: (X-X)-2-3-4-Q
Despite a better looking board for Greenstein, Ted Lawson bet on every street. Greenstein kept calling until the river where he mucked after Lawson showed his A-8 in the hole. Lawson was almost down to the felt after the action, but raked a nice pot and was around 12,000 in chips.
Schneider Taking Hits
Tom Schneider: (J-3-4)-J-2-9-K
Opponent: (Q-5-4)-10-10-9-2
Schneider called his opponent on every street, hoping to improve on his king-low. He was able to get down to a jack-low, but his opponent's 10-low was enough to rake the pot, giving Schneider his third consecutive loss. He would go on to lose one more a few hands later and his stack was down to around 30,000.

Lawson Takes Another Hit
Barry Greenstein: 7 9 6 10
Ted Lawson: Q-4-A-A
We entered the hand on 6th street when Greenstein bet into Lawson’s freshly paired aces. Lawson asked Greenstein what he had and Greenstein jokingly responded, “I think I have a flush.” Lawson made the call, and, after Greenstein checked dark on the river, Lawson checked behind. Greenstein turned over (A-6-8) for a 9-8-7-6-A low and Lawson muttered, “two pair,” as he mucked. Greenstein has 44,000 in chips after winning the 13k pot while Lawson, with 20,000, is looking to reverse his recent ill fortune.
Levi Pours it On
David Levi: A-4-3-5
Ed Nassif: 10-4-3
Seat 1: A-7-6-6
David Levi continues to assert his dominance at the table with a little help from the dealers. Levi bet out on every street in this instance, causing Nassif to abandon his hand on 5th street and the player in seat 1 to give up on 6th. This pot brings Levi up to 68,000, behind only Tom Schneider’s 74,000.
Lisandro Doubles Up Seely
Jeffrey Lisandro: 4 8 J 9
Jim Seely: 4 2 Q 8
Seely completed on 3rd street and Lisandro raised him. Seely called and the two saw 4th street. With 4-2 showing Seely bet out and Lisandro called. Both 5th street and 6th street went check-check, then on 7th street Lisandro bet and Seely reluctantly tossed the last of his chips in. Seely showed his (7-6-2) for an 8-7-6-4-2 and Lisandro, claiming a nine, mucked his cards. The hand doubled Seely up to 14,000 and dropped Lisandro to 27,000.

Rousso: A-4-6-9 (X-X-X)
Seat 9: K-3-9-8 (X-X-X)
Seat 5: 7-6-J-9 (5-4-2)
When seat 5 showed his 7-low hand Rousso was astonished and commented, "Seven!?..... Wow," then mucked her hand, as did seat 9. Rousso ended the level with around 25,000 in chips.
Schneider: 3-A-9-6 (X-X-X)
Lisandro: 8-6-K-K (X-X-X)
Juanda Loses a Big One to a 7-Low
John Juanda bet 1,000 after 6th street and was called by the player in seat 2. Both players checked the final card and there was a showdown:
Juanda: 3-8-Q-K (X-X-X)
Seat 2: 3-J-3-10 (7-5-6)
Seat 2 showed a 7-low and Juanda mucked his cards.

Matt Graham Chipping Up, Back-To-Back
In a four-way pot, Matt Graham took the betting lead with a 4 in the door. Graham got three callers, Tom Schneider, seat 2 and seat 6.
Graham: 4 4 J 7 - A 8 3
Schneider: 6 6 7 A
Seat 2: 2 Q J 2
Seat 6: A K 9 Q
Graham continued to bet all the way down to and through the river, seat 6 folded to the river bet and both Scheider and seat 2 called. Graham turned over an 8-7 low and raked a monster pot. After the hand Matt Graham climbed up to 5,500 while Tom Schenider fell down to 2,850.
The very next hand seat 8 completed the bet with a 6 and Matt Graham called with a deuce while seat 6 called with a 4. Graham led out on 4th street and continued to bet down to the river.
Graham: 2 5 A 6 -X-X-X
Seat 6: 4 5 8 - fold
Seat 8: 6 7 3 9 - X-X-X
Seat 6 folded on 5th street and seat 8 ended up folding to Graham's last bet on seventh street. Graham took two multi-way pots in a row and ended this hand with well over 6,000 in chips.
Katja Thater Defends Her Title No More
The 2007 defending champion Katja Thater was all in against a single opponent.

Greenstein Blames Canada
Barry Greenstein put Stephen Ladowsky all in on 5th street and here is how their boards ran out.
Greenstein: (3-8)-5-5-J-Q-(A)
Ladowsky: (x-x)-5-7-K-6-6-(x)
Greenstein made a jack-low on the river, which was good enough as Ladowsky threw his hand into the muck and made his exit in 11th place.

Harman Misses, Rouhani Survives... For a While
Jennifer Harman had Farzad Rouhani, bracelet winner in this year's event 10 (Omaha/Stud High-low), against the ropes and all in on sixth street. Their cards were:
Harman: 8-10-6-5 (A-2-J)
Rouhani: 4-J-4-2 (3-3-2)
With Rouhani all in the cards were flipped over after 6th street and Harman was drawing dead to a heart flush. She looked at her last down card and jokingly said, "flush," then smiled and flipped over the J , missing her flush. Rouhani's two pair won the hand and he doubled up. It wouldn't last, however, as he was eliminated later in the level.
Chop It Up!
Tom Schneider and Eric Froehlich have battled in a number of pots so far this tournament. Schneider was all in verus Froehlich after 6th street and the cards were revealed:
Schneider: 7-8-5-5 (2-4-K)
Froehlich: 7-6-6-K (A-4-7)
Froehlich's two pair took the high, but Schneider took half the pot with an 8-low, surviving to play on for a few more hands. Soon after, he busted.

Ouch, Harman Rolled Over by the Wheel
Leading out with bets on 5th and 6th street, Jennifer Harman-Traniello was suddenly raised by Rostislav Tsodikov to 16,000 on 7th-street and she looked sick about it. She thought for a minute and eventually made the call. Their hands were:
Harman: 5 10 2 A (X X X)
Tsodikov: 4 A K 10 (5 3 2 )
Tsodikov showed the unbeatable wheel and Jen mucked her hand, having lost nearly 50,000 from her stack. She was down to around 100,000 after the hand.
Hold'em
Billy "The Croc" Argyros got all in on a flop of K 5 2 only to see he was trailing Paul Zimbler's A K . Argyros called for a jack but the turn and river didn't save him, coming 10 and A . Zimbler had around 95,000 at the end of the level.
Stud 8
Saul Vs. Luske Yet Again
Marcel Luske: 8 Q 4 K (6 6 A )
Kevin Saul: 7 K 8 J (5 2 2 )
Marcel Luske bet 8,000 on 5th street and was called by Kevin Saul. Both players checked the rest of the way and Luske showed nothing more than a pair of 6's. Unfortunately for Saul, he only had a pair of deuces and no low, so Luske scooped the whole pot. Luske had around 130,000 at the level's end.
Omaha
The Jen and Tom Show
Jennifer Harman-Traniello bet 4,000 on a J 8 5 flop and was called by Tom Schneider. She bet 8,000 on the 4 turn card and Schneider called again. The 6 river card was checked by both players and the showdown followed:
Harman: A-Q-10-5
Schneider: A-8-6-4
Schneider's two pair took the pot. He had around 74,000 at the end of the level.
Ivey Struggling
After losing a number of pots during the level, Ivey has a short stack of just around 18,000.

Notable Hands:
Brunson Bursts The Bubble
Doyle Brunson moved his remaining chips into the pot once more and was called by Tom Schneider. Both players stood pat, but Doyle's 10-8 low was just a whisker too big to beat Schneider's made 9-8, and he headed home just short of the money.
The Mouth Makes Some Noise
Tom Dwan, who has been applying pressure consistently throughout the day, raised to 19,000, receiving a call from Tom Schneider. Mike Matusow then raised an additional 80,000, enough to push both of his opponents out of the hand.
A few hands later, Schneider opened the pot for 18,000 before getting called by Barry Greenstein. Mike Matusow again made a substantial reraise, but this time got looked up when Greenstein made the call. Both players drew one card. Greenstein checked over to Matusow, who made a bet of 55,000. Greenstein made the laydown, and the Mouth showed a 7-6 low. Matusow overtook Tom Dwan as the tournamen'ts chip leader by the end of the level.
Binger Goes Bust
Michael Binger moved all in and was called by Tom Dwan from the big blind. A clearly unhappy Binger discarded a pair of jacks as he drew two cards, hoping to complete his 9-7-5 low. Dwan stood his ground with Q-8-6-5-4, which held up as Binger flipped over an Ace and stormed away from the table in 14th place.

Jun 10, '08
Blinds: 2,500-5,000 (1,500 Ante)
Players Remaining: 17
Eliminations: Layne Flack, Chris Ferguson, Shawn Sheikhan
Notable Hands:
Flack Felted
Layne Flack raised to 16,000 before the flop and was moved all in by Jeff Lisandro. Flack made the call, drawing one card to beat Lisandro, who stood pat and showed a made 9-8 low. Flack couldn't make a better hand, and took his leave from the tournament area.
The Fall of Ferguson
Barry Greenstein raised to 15,000 and was called by Chris Ferguson. Tom Dwan then reraised to 53,000, eliciting a fold from Greenstein but prompting Jesus to put in the rest of his chips. Ferguson drew one card, showing 9-5-3-2 against Dwan's made 9-8 low (9-8-6-5-4). The deck wouldn't give Ferguson another baby, and his queen low eliminated him from the tournament. Durr's stack moved up to over 400,000 after the hand.
Big Papa In Big Trouble...Or Is He?
Michael Binger raised to 15,000 and was called by both Doyle Brunson and Tom Schneider. After each player drew one card, Doyle led out for 25,000. The bet was called by Schneider, who showed down 9-8-7-3-2 to win the pot, leaving doyle with under 30,000 in his stack.
A few hands later Brunson moved all of those chips into the middle over the top of a raise from the player in seat 2. The player called the extra 3,500 and drew two cards. Doyle stood pat, and flipped over K-Q-6-3-2. The player showed J-10, and could have drawn three miracle cards to make a better low, but instead paired his 10, doubling up Brunson and putting him in a position to make it through the bubble burst.
Meanwhile, many of the players are intently following the NBA Finals on a TV that has been set up in the tournament area specifically for that purpose. When a floor person wandered in front of the set to observe the players, Mike Matusow was quick to yell "Floorman! Get the heck out of the way!" before explaining to the gentleman that people had been killed for less.

Eliminations: Carlos Mortensen, Doyle Brunson, Michael Binger

Event 18 - $5,000 2-7 lowball w/ rebuys - The Bubble Approaches
