Jon "Poker Trip" Friedberg was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 2, 1974 but grew up in Houston, Texas with his family. After graduating high school in 1992, he attended the University of Arizona. He began playing poker during college at a local Indian casino, and started at $2-$4 limit. Friedberg quickly moved up to $20-$40 limit successfully but decided not to pursue poker professionally after college.
Friedberg received an MBA from Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Business and then founded a company called Reactrix Systems, Inc. with partner Matt Bell. The company grew to 100 employees and $60 million in capital.
Las Vegas became Friedberg's home after leaving Reactrix in 2004. He pursued poker and has also been ranked highly among online poker players. In 2006, Friedberg won a World Series of Poker bracelet in no-limit hold'em.
