Getting Close to the Money
Jun 09, '07
43 players now remain in the $5,000 World Championship of Pot-Limit Hold’em; that’s only 6 players from the money.
Kirill Gerasimov lost the majority of his stack when his pocket aces got cracked by a set of jacks on the flop. The player in Seat-7 moves all-in for $71,500 and Gerasimov insta-calls the all-in bet. Gerasimov shows AA while his opponent flips over JJ. The board comes J2239, giving Seat-7 a set of jacks on the flop. After this hand Gerasimov is severely crippled and now probably one of the shortest stacks remaining in the tournament.
Shawn Buchanan adds to his stack and eliminates Mark McPherson in the process. Buchanan triples the blind from late position and the McPherson moves all-in from the big blind for $17,000 more. Buchanan thinks for a minute and makes the call. McPherson shows 99 while Buchanan flips over KJ. The board comes AA72K, giving Buchanan a pair of kings on the river and eliminating McPherson a few spots before the bubble. Buchanan is sitting with a good sized stack, large enough to get him deep into the money spots.
An almost down and out Michael Binger buys himself some more time when he doubles up through Joe Sebok right before the break. Binger gets all of his money in the pot before the flop and Sebok makes the call and has him covered. Binger flips over Ah8h while Sebok shows 77. The board comes AQ10J3, giving Binger top pair and the pot.
Kathy Liebert started the day as the last women standing, but after her pocket tens were cracked by trip nines, she is sent to the rail. Kathy makes a big raise before the flop and Matt Gianetti moves all-in. Kathy quickly calls all-in and flips over 1010 while Gianetti shows A9. The board comes 984, Liebert still ahead until the 9 hits the turn giving Gianetti trips. The river brings the 4, no help to Liebert as she is now eliminated.
