Big Hands and Storylines:
Mitchell Smith Eliminated by James McManus
Mitchell Smith raised from the small blind and was called by James McManus in the big blind. The flop came down A102 and Smith continuation bet 20,000 into his opponent; McManus called. The turn was the J and Smith checked. McManus bet out 40,000 and Smith quickly called. The river was the 8 and Smith checked again. McManus put Smith all-in for about 180,000 more, slightly more than the size of the pot. Smith thought for a good while before making the call, but mucked his hand when he saw McManus’s KQ for a turned straight.
Since Smith was all-in on the hand, his cards were exposed by the dealer, who turned over J6 for a pair of jacks. The hand puts McManus right near a million in chips.
Garret Beckman Takes Out Two
Mike Spinasanta and Mirza Nagji were both all-in before the flop against the bigger stack of Garret Beckman:
Beckman: AK
Spinasanta: QQ
Nagji: 22
The flop was J73 and Beckman had flopped the nuts. The Q on the turn put his celebration on hold as it gave Spinasanta a draw to a full house. “Pair it!” shouted Spinasanta before the river card was dealt, but the river would be the 10. Spinasanta and Nagji were both eliminated at the hands of Beckman, who now has 240,000.
Maya Antonius Eliminated by Allen Carter
Maya Antonius was all-in against Allen Carter on a K98 flop. Antonius had JJ and was in very bad shape against the KJ of Carter. The turn and river were the 2 and 8 and Antonius was eliminated. Perhaps she can take some solace in the fact that she outlasted her husband.
One main event champ is gone, another doubles up
Phil Hellmuth, who is at the featured table today, recently doubled up with pocket kings against A-K. Almost simultaneously Johnny Chan with A-7 against the pocket eights of Damien Creurer. The board did not help save him and the champ of '87 and '88 is out.
Kostritsyn Doubles Up Another
Alexander Kostritsyn lost another all in pot to double up one of the shorter stacks, one of several that have been slowly chipping away at his stack. Damien Creurer got it all in pre-flop for 84,000 with A10 against Kostritsyn’s 55. The flop was a bingo for both, bringing A75. Although Kostritsyn spiked a set, his hand was vulnerable to any diamond or running cards for a better full house. The 8 on the turn gave Creurer a flush, and Kostritsyn was down to any board pair on the river. The J was a miss, and Creurer’s lone 10 was good enough for the pot. Kostritsyn finished the hand with around 800,000 in chips.
Barrile knocks out Poels
Pat Poels moved all in with A-Q and Chris Barrile called with pocket sixes. The board came 10-4-3-10-J and Barille took down the 300,000-chip pot.He now has roughly 800,000 chips.
Mike Matusow Can’t Beat Tens
After the action folded to him in middle position, Mike Matusow raised to a total of 16,000. All others folded to the player in the big blind, who made the call. The flop came down A72 and the big blind checked. Matusow continued his aggression by making a bet of 24,000, which his opponent called. The dealer put down the 5 on the turn, which brought a round of checks from the two players. The 9 fell on the river and again both players checked. “Two tens,” the player in the big blind announced as he turned over 1010. Matusow quietly nodded for a few moments before tossing his cards into the muck.
Who Needs a Spade?
With already about 250,000 in the pot, and with the flop coming out 952, Suresh Prabhu announced all-in and sent another 236,000 into the middle of the table. Prabhu was operating from the small blind, and his only opponent was Derek Buonano in the big blind. Buonano had enough to call, but would only be left with 120,000 if he called and lost. He tanked for several minutes before deciding to call, and showed K9 for top pair. He was leading as Prabhu held Q3 for the flush draw. But rather than make a flush, Prabhu would hit the Q on the turn to overtake Buonano’s pair, and the A on the river clinched the massive pot for Prabhu.
Two Monsters Flopped; Only One is Best
Mike Matusow limped from middle position, Cornel Pazai limped while one from the cut-off, the button called, and both blinds also called, creating five-way action to the flop. The players were treated to the KJ10, and after the small blind checked, Joseph Ward in the big blind bet 12,000. Matusow folded, Pazai called, and the rest of the field folded. After the 6 on the turn, Ward checked and Pazai bet 24,000. Ward then check-raised to 75,000, at which point Pazai reraised all-in and drew a quick call from Ward. Both players held monsters, with Pazai having Q9 for bottom-end straight and a flush draw. Ward had flopped broadway with the AQ. Ward managed to dodge the river when the 7 bricked, and Pazai was forced to match Ward’s remaining 175,000 chips.

Big Hands and Storylines:
McManus Making Moves
James McManus just pulled a bold, aggressive move to take down a pot pre-flop. As reported by Alan Jaffray, David Saab raised to 15,000 from the cutoff and Matt Matros re-raised to 50,000. Action folded to James McManus in the big blind who slid a stack of 30 orange chips into the middle of the table, making it 150,000 total. Both Saab and Matros folded, and McManus showed 8-4 offsuit for an audacious bluff. With that pot, McManus is at 820,000 on the day.
Robert Mizrachi Eliminated
Here are the details of the Robert Mizrachi elimination we mentioned in the prior update:
William Soffin raised from early position to 12,500 and was called by Robert Mizrachi in middle position. The flop came down J94 and Sofin moved all-in for more than three times the pot. Mizrachi made the call and they turned up their hands:
Soffin: QJ
Mizrachi: KJ
Mizrachi’s king kicker had him well in the lead. The turn was the 7, leaving Soffin only three outs on the river. Soffin spiked one of those outs however – the Q – and Mizrachi was eliminated. Soffin’s aggressive play and good fortune have helped him run his stack up to 460,000.
Cliff Josephy Doubles, but runs into bad luck and is out
Just one hand after Mizrachi had been eliminated, the action continued at table Orange 28. Salomon Sutton raised to 16,000 from the button and was met by a quick all-in by Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy. The raise was for 40,000 more and Sutton made the call. It was a race situation: Josephy showed 1010 and Sutton had AK. The flop was 1076 and Josephy took a giant lead in the hand. When the turn 10 gave Josephy quads, he exclaimed, “That is a lot of tens.” The river was meaningless and Josephy doubled up to 120,000. Sutton would be eliminated later in the level.
Later on in the level, a player was all in on a 9-8-6 flop and Josephy made the call with pocket jacks. He was up against J-10, meaning he needed to avoid a queen or seven. A queen came on the turn, and the river was a blank. Josephy had to give his opponent 174,000 chips in the hand, and was left witht just 60,000 left. He later moved all in with K-J and was up against A-K of Dag Martin Mikkelsen. Josephy flopped an open-ended straight draw, but didn't get it and was eliminated.
Kirill Gerasimov Eliminated
Gus Hansen raised from under-the-gun and action folded around to Danny Mitnick in middle position. Mitnick tossed in a raise to 46,000. Without too much hesitation, Kirill Gerasimov moved all-in from the small blind for 130,000 total. Hansen folded his hand, leaving the table to dictate his thoughts into his voice recorder, and Mitnick made the call. The two turned up their hands:
Gerasimov: KK
Mitnick: AK
Gerasimov asked Hansen if he had folded an ace, but Hansen claimed to have a pocket pair. That was reinforced when the dealer laid out the flop: AA10. Gerasimov needed runner-runner kings to survive, but the turn and river were the 2 and 5 and he was eliminated.
The hand takes Mitnick up to 350,000.
Can Kings Hold One Time for Mark Vos?
After getting it all in pre-flop for his last 65,000 in chips with KQ, Andy Goetsch found himself dominated by Mark Vos’ KK. As the camera crews came over to capture the moment, Vos had something to say. “I just want it to be known that someone folded the A and Q,” Vos jokingly mentioned, already fearing that he would be outdrawn. The Q102 flop was a start, and Vos was quick to note that only the case queen remained in the deck. The A on the turn brought jabs from Vos’ tablemates that his opponent could now catch any of the remaining jacks to make a straight and chop the pot. Fortunately for Vos, a miracle occurred and the 3 fell on the river. Vos finished the hand with almost 500,000 in chips.
Schoenfeld gets set on river and is knocked out
Adam Schoenfeld made a reraise and then called all in with pocket tens. He later said he knew his opponent, Sigurd Eskeland, was weak when he moved all in. But his KJ was still more or less a coinflip. But it was looking good when the flop was 8-7-6, and great after a nine came on the turn to give him a straight. He said "no set" over and over, and then the dealer went ahead and gave him a set. The ten on the river gave Eskeland a better straight and the pot.
Cantu makes call and knocks out player
Brandon Cantu called an all in reraise with pocket fours and found himself up against A-J. The board came 10-7-2-5-7 and Cantu's big stack -- he started the day with 710,000 -- got a bit bigger.
Joseph Busts Another
Chip leader Jeremy Joseph sent another player to the rails with a fortunate turn card. He raised from early position to 15,000, then Kenneth Lee announced all-in from the next seat. Lee had 70,500 in chips that went to the center of the table. Play was folded back to Joseph, who was able to call with Q10 thanks to his massive chip stack. Lee held 77 and led after the flop of 542, but the 10 on the turn vaulted Joseph into the lead, and he stayed there when the 6 came on the river.
Rosen Eliminated
Jamie Rosen, who suffered a major blow to his chip stack earlier in the day, was eliminated when his AQ went all-in against an opponent’s KK and couldn’t improve. The board ran out J9462.
