Day 1A Summary SpotlightJan 23, '11 The players who will be included in the final portrait of the day came into focus during the second to last level of play today, with some big names either making their exits or growing their chip stacks. A few players might have been distracted by the huge television screen that towers over the tournament floor. It had a live feed to the Andy Roddick match at the Australian Open and more than one player had diverted at least one eye away from the felt. Patrik Antonius was watching the tennis match as intently as anyone but that didn’t stop him from growing one of the largest stacks in the tournament. After he built his stack steadily throughout level 6 he ended the level with his biggest win of the day. After a series of bets and raises took place the cards fell 10 9 4 K on the board. The pot was pretty sweet when his opponent bet 36,000 after the turn and that was when Antonius decided to shove all in. His opponent made the call and had Antonius covered. Their cards: Antonius: K 10 River: 6 Antonius doubled up to 125,000 after the hand. Level 12 Hour One Update: Joe Cada OutJul 12, '10 Note: Players are now on a 90-minute dinner break and will return at 8:15 p.m. Blinds: 1,000-2,000 with a 300 ante Players Remaining: 1,454 out of 7,319 Average Chip Count: 151,011 Card Player Chip Counts Barry Shulman – 267,000 Tournament Leaderboard: 1. Kevin Gates – 590,000 Notable Eliminations: Joe Cada Big Hands: Ng Can’t Call The player in seat 2 raised to 4,200 preflop and the player in seat 4 made the call. The action then folded to Evelyn Ng in the small blind and she repopped to 16,000. Seat 2 called while seat 4 got out of the way. The flop came down K102 and Ng led with 12,200. Seat 2 made the call and the turn was the A. Ng checked this time and seat 2 bet 16,000. That induced a fold from Ng and she was down to 88,000 after dropping that pot. Hennigan Sees A Flop The player under the gun raised to 4,500 and the action folded around to John Hennigan in the big blind. He decided to make the call and both players saw a flop of J52. Hennigan checked and his opponent fired 7,000. Hennigan uncapped his cards and mucked his hand and he was at 90,000. Joe Cada Eliminated Four players limped preflop only to see Joe Cada move all in for 67,800. The button was the only player who decided to look him up and they turned their hands: Cada: AQ Cada was racing for his chance to repeat and the flop looked promising when it fell K87, giving him a spade draw. The turn was the 7, the right color but wrong shape. The river was the 6, bricking out for Cada and he made his way to the rail. Corkins Bets Out The Competition Four players, including Hoyt Corkins, limped in preflop and saw the flop come 864. The action was checked around to Corkins and he fired 4,600. Everyone mucked and Corkins took down a small pot. His stack was anything but small, however, as he was up to 287,000. Mizrachi Confused By Play Michael Mizrachi opened for 5,100 from under the gun. The next player in seat 4 flatted and seat 5 did the same. Action then folded around to the big blind who moved all in for 6,400 more. The action was back on Mizrachi and he repopped for another 20,000. Seat 4 then put in another raise to 65,000. Seat 5 mucked and Mizrachi took a tank session as the ESPN cameras surrounded the table. Mizrachi eventually decided to muck and looked confused when his opponent tabled JJ. Mizrachi apparently did not understand why his opponent raised so much with just jacks. The big blind tabled AQ and never improved as he was eliminated. Mizrachi was down to 90,000. Steve Sung Eliminated On a flop of AJ710 Steve Sung bet 8,500 into a player on the button. Sung had just about 20,000 behind. His opponent bet enough to put him all in and Sung went into the tank. He eventually made the call and his opponent said it was a good call. Sung tabled the K10 and was ahead of the 97 of his opponent. However, the 8 on the river gave Sung’s opponent a straight flush. Sung was gone. Billy Kopp Coolered Billy Kopp three-bet a late position raise from the big blind. He was four-bet and Kopp smooth called. The flop came 884 and Kopp checked. His opponent checked behind. The turn brought the A and Kopp checked. His opponent bet big and Kopp moved all in. His opponent insta-called with the 88 and Kopp exposed the AA. Kopp was eliminated when the K fell on the river. Patrik Antonius Loses a Pot On a board reading Q9783 Patrik Antonius was faced with a 17,400 chip bet from an opponent. Antonius went into the tank before finally making the call. His opponent tabled the A7 for the nuts and Antonius dropped to 160,000 after the hand. Nguyen Scores a Double Up It was a battle of the blinds when the player in the small blind raised and Scotty Nguyen put in a three-bet from the big blind. Nguyen had put in nearly all of his chips and apparently, the small blind thought all of them were in as he made the call and tabled A-J. “I’m not all-in, baby,” said Scotty as the dealer put out a flop of 2-2-4. They got the rest of his chips in the middle and Nguyen showed pocket queens. The queen on the turn assured Nguyen’s double up and he is up to 140,000. Candido made the call and Farha got out of the way as Harder turned over AK, dominating Candido’s AQ. The board ran out J73JK and Harder doubled up to 190,000. Shorr Drops One In a battle of the blinds, Shannon Shorr raised to 6,600 from the small blind. The big blind then repopped to 16,000 and Shorr made the call. Both players saw the flop come down 942 and they both checked. The turn was the 6 and Shorr led out with 13,100. The big blind called and the river was the 5. Both players checked and Shorr tabled A6. It was no good as the big blind tabled pocket queens to take down the pot. Shorr was down to 415,000. Kassela Chips Up Picking up the action after the flop came down 10107, Frank Kassela bet 7,500 and the button made the call. The turn was the 4 and Kassela checked. The button bet 10,000 and Kassela called. The river was the Q and both players checked. Kassela then tabled 74 for tens and sevens and he took down the pot. He was at 270,000. Antonius At A Quarter Mil Patrik Antonius moved all in from the small blind and the big blind decided to put himself at risk by making the call. Antonius: A8 Antonius was dominating and the flop came down A96, giving Antonius a stranglehold on the hand. The turn was the 3, a blank. The river was the 8, giving Antonius an unnecessary two pair and he scored the knockout. He was at 250,000. Rolf Slotboom Takes Big Hit There was a flurry of raises preflop which ended up with Rolf Slotboom calling the all-in bet of his opponent for 67,000. Slotboom showed QQ and was way behind his opponent’s KK. “There are lots of queens in that deck,” pleaded Slotboom as the dealer dealt out the A36 fop. “Queen, Queen, Queen, save the best for last,” Slotboom continued. The turn was the 9 and the river was the A and Slotboom dropped to just 54,000. Shulman Eliminated Barry Shulman committed the last of his chips on a flop of Q68 and found some bad news. Shulman showed A6 and was trailing his opponent’s KQ. Shulman would need to hit his five-outer to keep his main event hopes alive, but the 4 on the turn and the 5 on the river sent Shulman home just shy of the money. Matt Matros Takes One We got to the table as the flop was being dealt and there was already well over 100,000 in the middle. The flop came out AJ4 and a player in the blinds checked over to Matt Matros who bet out 55,000. That sent the player in the blinds deep into the tank before finally folding. Matros took the pot and cracked the 300,000 mark as his stack grew to 325,000. Full House For Bellande The board read 10936 when Jean-Robert Bellande and Andrew Brown got all of the money in the middle. Bellande was way ahead of Brown when he showed the 33 for a flopped set of threes and Brown was left with just unimproved KK. The river was the 9, which filled up Bellande and he doubled up to 255,000 in chips and Brown fell to 360,000. Kostritsyn Wins a Big Pot The player in the hijack seat checked over to Alexander Kostritsyn on the button with the flop reading Q910. Kostritsyn bet 15,000, the hijack seat raised to 31,400 and Kostritsyn made the call. The turn was the 9 and the hijack bet out 44,700, which was called by Kostritsyn. The river was the J and both players checked. Kostritsyn showed QJ and his opponent showed a complete bluff when he tabled the 7-6. The flop came J104 and Elezra checked to Antonius who fired 20,000. Ivey raised to 56,000 and Elezra quickly got out of the way. Antonius tanked to consider the big pot before him and two seats down Abe Mosseri asked, “You want a calculator?” Eventually, Antonius folded and Ivy took down a nice pot. Afterward, Ivey told Mosseri that he shouldn’t make comments during a hand like that. Seven Card Stud Deeb Eliminated By Zolotow We did not catch the action but Freddy Deeb was eliminated from the tournament by Steve Zolotow. Deeb could not pair any of his cards on seventh street and Zolotow took down the pot, knocking Deeb out in the process. Stud/8 Hellmuth Steaming Phil Hellmuth and Erik Seidel tangled in a hand that is still driving the Poker Brat nuts. Picking up the action after seventh street, Seidel showed down AQ55332 for two pair and no low. Hellmuth was showing KJ76 and waited a long time before finally mucking his hand. Seidel took the pot and improved to 190,000, much to the chagrin of Hellmuth. He proceeded to question Seidel’s skills at Stud/8 but the leaking of chips was not over for Hellmuth. Oppenheim Adds To Hellmuth’s Frustration Picking up the action on fifth street, Phil Hellmuth bet and David Oppenheim called. The action reversed on sixth and seventh street as Oppenheim was the one leading out. Hellmuth called the bet on sixth street, but could not do so on seventh street, revealing his hand AJ107655 for a pair of fives. He threw it into the muck and Oppenheim took down the pot showing only his up-cards of 8722. Oppenheim was at 290,000 after the pot while Hellmuth was at 105,000. Bach Doubles Through David Singer We caught up with the action on fifth street. David Bach put in a bet of 10,000, leaving himself just 800 behind. Singer raised to put him all in and Bach made the easy call. After the last two cards were dealt, Bach showed J9101010AA for a full house. Singer could not beat that and Bach doubled up to 60,000 after starting with 25,000. Mouth Shut Mike Matusow was all in for his last 17,000 against George Lind. Here is how there boards ran out: Lind: 762J108K Matusow started with three spades but then caught three hearts. He ended up making two pair but Lind’s diamond flush was enough to get the high and Matusow did not qualify for a low, leaving him with nothing but a story to tell on his way to the exit. No Limit Hold’em Oh Snap, The Glasses Came Off Already fuming from irritating previous hands, Phil Hellmuth got heads up against Erik Seidel and the flop came J73. Hellmuth fired 9,500 only to have Seidel raise to 26,600. Hellmuth instantly ripped his sunglasses off and began gesturing toward the board in disbelief while talking to himself. This continued for a few minutes after he folded, causing Seidel to eventually laugh out loud as Hellmuth talked about how Erik was going to hang himself in the tournament. Hellmuth had around 120,000 in chips after the hand, and Seidel had around 205,000. Razz Baker Low Balls Antonious Picking up the action after seventh street, David Baker and Patrik Antonius checked their options and went to showdown. Baker showed a 7-6-5-4-2 low and Antonius examined his hole cards for a bit before finally mucking. Baker took the pot and was up to 275,000 while Antonius was down to 88,000. Limit Hold’em Binger Stays Afloat on the River On a flop of J107 raising war got Michael Binger all in with his last 30,000 against one of the tournament’s chip leaders in Alexander Kostritsyn. Binger’s AQ was behind but with outs against Kostritsyn’s 88. The 5 turn was no help but the A on the river gave Binger top pair to double up to 60,000 and stay alive. The loss was a mere flesh wound to Kostritsyn, who still sat with more than 400,000 in chips. Left In The Deck Ivey Not Interested In Tournament Of Champions An interesting conversation took place at Phil Ivey’s table. Eli Elezra and Huck Seed were asking Ivey if he was going to play in the Tournament of Champions later during the WSOP. Ivey insisted he could not play if the tournament was during the series. “Do you know how many bracelet bets I’ve got going?” he told the table. Elezra and Seed pressed him further but Ivey would not budge on his stance, so it appears Ivey will not take part in the tournament won by names like Mike Matusow, Annie Duke and Mike Sexton. No Limit Hold’em Almost Fireworks Phil Ivey raised to 6,000 preflop from the button and Patrik Antonius reraised to a total of 22,000 from the big blind. Ivey instantly started stacking chips that would’ve amounted to another significant reraise, but ultimately laid his hand down. Antonius had around 230,000 after the hand. Boeken and Mosseri Keeping Active Noah Boeken and Abe Mosseri have been involved in many of the hands in the no limit hands. In one Boeken made it 6,000 preflop and Mosseri called. The flop came Q75 and Boeken fire 8,500 into the pot. Mosseri quickly raised to 20,000 though, prompting Boeken to ask him how much he had left behind, before folding his hand. Later, Mosseri raised to 5,000 and Phil Ivey called. Both players checked the entire board of AK325, and Ivey mucked when Mosseri showed a king. The pot sent Mosseri’s stack to around 210,000. Pot Limit Omaha David Bach Doubles Through Josh Arieh Picking up the action after the flop, the board read 863. Josh Arieh bet 4,500 and David Bach raised the pot, 15,000.
