Jonathan Lane Eliminated in 2nd Place ($187,844)
Card Player columnist Matt Matros was on the short short stack heading five-handed into the dinner break, but managed to win a big pot shortly after play resumed against then chip leader Brandon Meyers, putting himself back in contention with over 1 million in chips.
Matros started Level 24 off by busting Brandon Meyers in 4th place with K K against Q Q, and ended the level after knocking out Matt Hawrilenko in 3rd place by drawing to a flush against Hawrilenko’s made two pair.
Matros began heads-up play with a chip lead of about 3.2 million to Jonathan Lane’s 1.1 million. Lane managed to steal the chip lead in Level 25 after turning a wheel to scoop a big a pot right after the break, but his run at the top was short lived after Matros picked off a huge bluff with top pair on a scare board with three to a flush, a baby straight and a pair. That hand put Matros way out in front and it wasn’t long before Lane got the short stack all in before the flop in the final hand of the tournament.
Matt Matros button-raised to 65,000 on the button, Jonathan Lane moved all in from the big blind and Matros called.
Matros lead with A 10 against Lane’s J 10.
The board came Q Q 5 4 4, no help to Jonathan Lane who was eliminated in 2nd place ($187,844). Matt Matros wins his second gold bracelet in Event #52 and the $303,501 grand prize.

It’s a rare sight at this year’s World Series of Poker to see a tournament reach it’s final table on day 2, but that’s the case here in the $2,500 mixed hold’em event, which is down to the final nine players.
Leading the way is Brandon Meyers, who has more than twice as many chips as his nearest competitor, Noah Boeken. Other notables at the final table include Matt Matros and Matt Hawrilenko.
Each player is now guaranteed at least $24,107 for making it this far, but all eyes are glued to the $303,501 first-place prize that accompanies the gold bracelet.
Be sure to check back this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. for level-by-level updates from the final table.
