Back and Fourth; Players Trade the Chip Lead

With the elimination of Chris Bell in 3rd place ($135,858), Viacheslav Zhukov entered heads-up play with the chip lead over Roch Cousineau. It took nearly two levels of play, but Cousineau finally took the lead for himself for the first time since heads-up play began. Zhukov managed to extend his lead over Cousineau several times over the past few levels while Cousineau was only able to chip back to even before being kicked down to the short stack once again. Finally about halfway through Level 30, Cousineau was able to chip and putt his way into the lead after forcing Zhukov off of some big hands and then further extended his lead with some very aggressive post-flop action.

Cousineau Takes the Lead, Zhukov Steals it Back

Cousineau’s run at the top didn’t last long as Zhukov managed to steal the lead back as the last level started winding down.

Zhukov opened the button for 225,000 and Cousineau called from the big blind.

The flop came 9Spade Suit7Diamond Suit5Heart Suit, and both players checked.

The turn was the 4Spade Suit, Cousineau bet 350,000 and Zhukov called.

The river was the 5Spade Suit, Cousineau bet 1,150,000 and Zhukov called.

Zhukov rivered a flush and to win the pot and take the lead back with about 3.5 million to Cousineau’s 1.2 million.

Cousineau Doubles Back Into the Lead

Shortly after Zhukov doubled through Cousineau to take back the chip lead, Cousineau doubled right back into a more than 2:1 chip lead over Zhukov after turning a gustshot straight.

Cousineau turned a straight and doubled up to about 3.3 million that hand while Zhukov dropped down to around 1.4 million in chips.

Cousineau was all in for his tournament life and ahead before the flop with a pair of aces, but Zhukov flopped two pair to win the pot and eliminate Roch Cousineau in 2nd place ($204,426). Viacheslav Zhukov wins Event no. 58, taking home the $330,277 grand prize and the fifty-eighth gold bracelet of the 2012 WSOP.
