Updates on Final Day (Apr 11, 06)

Ricky Zilem Wins!

The very young Texan from Coppell won the 2006 4th Annual Five-Star World Poker Classic $1,500 event, taking home $233,045 in prize money, the diamond-gold bracelet, while qualifying for a seat into the $25,000 World Poker Tour Championship on the 18th.

David Byer is Runner Up!

David Byer limped in on the button and Ricky Zilem checked to see the flop (9h-5s-4d). Zilem checked and Byer bet 25,000. Zilem and Byer began to banter about the amount of the bet and Zilem finally says, "You can't make me fold with that," then calls. The 6c landed on the turn and Byer bet another 55,000. Again with the banter, then Zilem raised the minimum of 110,000. Byer thought for a moment, then pushed all-in. Zilem immediately called. Byer turned over 3h-2c, for a low straight draw and Zilem showed 8d-7d for the nuts (a higher straight). The meaningless river was the 10s and Byer was runner up.

David Byer went out in 2nd place ($124,525).

Ricky Zilem Doubles Up Through David Byer

David Byer was on the button and raised with A-Q. Ricky Zilem called with 6h-4d. The flop came Jd-10h-4s and Zilem paired his four to put him in the lead. The turn tripped him up with the 4c and the river only stung Byer by pairing his ace (As). Zilem pulled in a monster pot worth over 700,000, making him the new chip leader.

Heads-Up

Ricky will go into the next hand with the button and 550,000 in chips. David Byer has twice that with over 1 Million.

John Roveto Returns to Today's $2,000 Event.

John Roveto, Sr. raised and Ricky Zilem pushed, all-in. Roveto called, but Zilem had him covered. Roveto had Ad-10d, but Zilem was ahead with pocket kings (Kh-Ks). The board came Js-10s-6h-4c-3s, and Zilem's kings held up, awarding him a monster pot and eliminating Roveto.

John Roveto went out in 3d place ($65,720).

Approximate Chip Counts

John Roveto Sr. 220,000
Ricky Zilem 360,000
David Byer 900,000

Hoang Nguyen is Out in 4th Place ($38,065)

Hoang Nguyen raised all-in, on the button, for 200,000. David Byer called from the big blind. Nguyen had pocket nines (9d-9h) and Byer had As-8s. The board came A-7-7, giving Byer top pair. The turn was a 5 and the river, a 7, gaving both players a full house. Byer with the higher hand sent Nguyen to the rail. Hoang Nguyen went out in 4th place with $38,065.

Davood Mehrmand is Out in 5th Place ($27,675)

Davood Mehrmand went all in before the flop with pocket tens (10c-10s) and David Byer called the 150,000 bet with another pair of aces in the hole (Ad-As). The flop came Kh-Jh-4s to keep Byer in the lead going into the turn. But the 10h turned the tables on Byer to give Merhmand the advantage. There was a straight draw in the rafters for Byer and all he needed was a Q to take Mehrmand out of the competition. Things seem to be going Byer's way because he got his Qh on the river to send Davood Mehrmand to the rail.

Davood Mehrmand went home in 5th place with $27,675.

Approximate Chip Counts

John Roveto, Sr. 150,000

Hoang Nguyen Doubles Up Through Byer

David Byer raised for 50,000 (on the button). Nguyen, next to act in the small blind, re-raised 40,000 more. Byer called and turned over Kc-4h and Nguyen showed his pocket treys (3d-3s). The flop came Ac-10h-9s and Nguyen was still in the lead with his small pair. The turn was the 6h and the 5h fell on the river to award Nguyen the pot and double him up through Byer. Byer is feeling no pain with over 700,000 in chips.
