It seems like just yesterday that the
World Series of Poker ended. I know that I still haven't completely recovered yet. Thank God that we still have … six … no, five … wait … damn! It's nearly time again? Ahhhhhh!
I thought last year was tough, but with 55 events this year, and two a day in many cases, last year will seem like a cakewalk. As exhausted as I still am from last year, I must admit, I feel a bit of an adrenaline rush when I know the
WSOP is right around the corner. How many cashes can I make? How many final tables? How many bracelets can I win this year?
I'm going to try not to get too cocky this year. While I had a great tournament in 2005 (one win, three final tables, and four cashes), last year's accomplishment was less than stellar (only one cash). I came close to losing a bet in which I laid 100-to-1
that I would cash in at least one event. I was three tables or fewer from the money five times, and missed the money by three spots and was even one out of the money once (in razz, after I had been the chip leader, too!), so I was knocking on the door the whole tourney, without much luck.
This year, I hope to make my own luck. What can I do to have a better tournament than last year? I know that I was more focused in 2005 than I was last year, so there's a start. There will be a lot more events this year, so that will also help my odds. If I can play in at least half of the events, I should make at least a few final tables and, hopefully, win a bracelet or two (or maybe even three).
My dad has many sayings that he refers to as "Doyleisms." My favorite is, "Luck is what happens when hard work meets determination." God knows I am determined, and if I can work hard enough, who knows what might happen? Like I said, this year, I hope to make my own luck.
