Maxim Sorokin came out on top after four days of play and stacked final table, which included World Poker Tour champion Keven Stammen, World Series of Poker bracelet winner Jared Hamby, Zo Karim, Eric Molina and Dan Alspach in the Card Player Poker Tour Wynn Classic main event.
Sorokin defeated Kevin Calenzo heads-up for $101,619, the title of CPPT champion and 408 Card Player Player of the Year points.
After trading the chiplead back and forth throughout the final duel, everything came to an end when Calenzo raised to 125,000 and Sorokin moved all-in from the big blind. Calenzo called and tabled A9, but Sorokin was ahead with A9. After a board of 662K5 the tournament was over.
It was Calenzo’s second deep run in a CPPT Wynn main event. In 2013 Calenzo finished sixth in the $5,000 no-limit hold’em main event for $43,672. Calenzo left with $82,042 and 340 POY points this time around.
The second stop of Season III of the CPPT drew 248 entrants and exceeded the guarantee, tallying a prize pool of $481,120.
When the final day got underway Wednesday afternoon, only 13 players remained.
The first elimination of the day was Jon Lacatoen, who was crippled in a hand with Timothy Chang when Chang turned a straight to best Lacatoen’s ace-queen. On the very next hand, Zo Karim eliminated a short-stacked Lacatoen.
Following Lacatoen to the rail was Ryan Leadem, who ran his pocket sevens into Maxim Sorokin’s pocket kings. Just a few minutes later Richard Hawes made his exit when Keven Stammen bested his pocket fours with ace-king on a six-two-two-jack-king board.
With Hawes exit, the final ten players combined to a single table. Leo Wolpert was then eliminated when he got the last of his chips in the middle holding pocket jacks. Unfortunately for Wolpert, Calenzo was holding pocket aces and called.
Hamby was next to go after his pocket jacks were done in by Sorokin’s pocket sevens on a ten-four-three-five-six board.
In quick succession, Stammen, Alspach, Chang and Karim were all eliminated. The eliminations slowed and the table played four-handed for a while before Eric Molina was sent packing. With Stephen Graner’s elimination as the third place finisher, Sorokin and Calenzo were left to battle it out.
