Play Goes Long on the Money Bubble on Day 4 in Connecticut -- Marchese Can Take POY Lead Tomorrow

Thomas MarcheseThe money bubble at any given poker tournament can have a mind of its own. Sometimes it is charged right through without a second thought, and at other times it takes forever to burst. Day 4 of the 2010 World Poker Tour World Poker Finals $10,000 no-limit hold’em main event was an ode to the latter. It took well over three hours of hand-for-hand play today to decide who would make the money.

The unlucky three left out from the final 28 that returned today were Ronald Lee, Larry Ruffino, and the bubble boy Alex Berger. Some big-name professionals were the first to fall in the money when Gavin Smith (25th), Kyle Bowker (24th), Mike Beasley (22nd) and Josh Arieh (21st place) all fell on the way to the final two tables. The tournament day ended two spots shy of a final table of ten, so there will be a dozen players who will be gunning for the final six spots at the television table when play begins tomorrow.

This tournament will factor into the Card Player Player of the Year race and it already has, with top contenders still in action here in Connecticut or cashing today. Thomas Marchese (5,366 points) ended the night as the chip leader with 1,832,000, and Sorel Mizzi (4,037 points) finished with 789,000. Those players are second and third respectively in the current POY standings. POY leader Dwyte Pilgrim holds 5,576 points and although Mizzi would still be 99 points behind Pilgrim if he wins the event, Marchese can overtake Pilgrim with an eighth-place finish tomorrow. Mike Beasley (3,356 points — seventh place overall) cashed in 22nd place to add 36 points to his POY total today.

Here are the remaining POY points up for grabs in this event:

1: 1,440 points
2: 1,200 points
3: 960 points
4: 720 points
5: 600 points
6: 480 points
7: 360 points
8: 240 points
9: 120 points
10-12: 72 points

Action begins at noon EST tomorrow and the field will return to play down to the final table of the event. Check back for more live coverage at that time from this WPT main event. For now here are the tournament statistics from day 4:
