The PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) has crowned its first ever female champion.
Young-shin Im, of Korea, was one of 236 entrants who packed into the Shangri-La Mactan Resort & Spa in the Philippines last week for the PHP 100,000 buy-in APPT Cebu main event.
After five days of poker, Im eventually found herself heads up with Australian Fabiano Michael. Following a couple of hours of back and forth action, the two got all of their chips in the middle on this interesting hand:
Michael raised to 150,000 from the button, and after some consideration Im pushed in 150,000 to presumably call, not taking into account that the dealer had already pulled in her 50,000 big blind. The tournament director was called over, and he made the decision that Im should be bound to making a minimum-raise.
Facing the min-raise, Michael moved all in for 1,945,000 more. Im thought briefly before calling, having Michael just barely covered. Michael showed 55 and Im flipped over A6. The flop brought A72 to give Im the lead. The K hit on the turn and the 2 completed the board, making Im the APPT’s first female champion. She earned the APPT Cebu trophy and the first-place prize of PHP 5,810,000 (approximately USD $132,500).
Im qualified for the APT Cebu main event through a $22 tournament on PokerStars. Her historic victory marked her fifth APPT cash in the last year and a half. Her previous best APPT finish was a 15th place run in the 2009 APPT Macau main event.
Season 4 of the APPT continues Dec. 7-12 when it lands at the Star City Casino in Sydney, Australia.
