Poker Opinion -- The Real Money Is In Online PokerCarl Sampson Shares His Thoughts On The Game |

It is amazing to me why so many people play Texas hold’em live when they can play poker online. I get asked why I do not play live tournaments or live cash games by someone every few weeks. In my mind then the decision really isn’t close. When you factor in having the capacity to play as many tables as you can handle which means many more hands per hour and the fact that you can game select better then it really isn’t a very difficult choice to make.
I mix socially with a fair number of poker players who only play live in pubs or at local casinos. Many of them cannot understand why I play online poker but yet they all know that I do very well at it. What surprises me is that all of them play the game with the primary goal of making money. However the best avenue in which to make money playing poker is online and not live. There are several reasons for this and like I have just stated, being able to play more tables and more hands per hour is a massive plus point.
If you go into a casino then you may not have a great choice of games to choose from. At the end of the day game selection is critical in poker and this applies whether you play live or online. However I have known live game players who were simply not making all that much money for one simple reason and that was to do with not seeing all that many hands per hour. When you look at earn rates using software like PokerTracker then it measures big bets per hundred hands. Or you could simply look at big blinds per hundred hands for a simpler comparison.
So if you applied this concept to live poker then imagine if you were playing say $1-$2 live no limit Texas hold’em poker and crushing this level for a huge ten big blinds per hundred hands. This equates to $20/100 hands but the pace of play in live poker is agonizingly slow if you are used to online play. You may only be seeing as little as 25 hands per hour if you factor in misdeals, arguments, poor dealers and all of the rest of it. This basically means that your $20/100 hand figure equates to $5/hr. However with online poker then you could be making far less dollars per hundred hands but yet make far more money.
Say if you made only 5 big blinds per hundred hands at the same level which equates to $10/100 hands. But yet you could manage to play eight tables at once and could see 600 hands per hour. Suddenly you are making $60/hr compared to the $5/hr playing live. The volume totally offsets the bigger advantage of playing live and playing weaker players.
