WSOP Circuit -- Harrah's Rincon $10,000 Western Regional Championship Day 1Ali Eslami Jumps out to the Lead with 128,550 on Day 1 Near San Diego |
|
Day 1 at the World Series of Poker Circuit $10,000 Western Regional Championship welcomed 91 players into the mix at the Harrah’s Rincon near San Diego, CA. There were 59 players who survived the day on Sunday. Registration will remain open through the first level of play on Monday, so the overall total is still expected to grow.
The chip leader after day 1 is a familiar face. Ali Eslami made it through the day with 128,550 to pace the field. Trailing him in the six-figure club is Kyle Bowker with 121,500. Carlos Mortensen (87,600) and Tim West (83,725) are also near the top of the standings and both professionals are looking to build on early success in 2011 with a strong showing here. West won the Wynn Classic main event last week and that was good for $318,738. Mortensen took third place in the World Poker Tour L.A. Poker Classic main event to become the most successful player in WPT history earlier this month.
What the talented field lacked in numbers it made up for in talent. There were some tough tables throughout the day but none more so than table 10, which at one point featured David Williams, Michael Bevenuti, Jonathan Little, Steve Brecher, Erik Seidel, Sam Stein, and Mortensen. Another top professional who made it to the Harrah’s Rincon was Phil Hellmuth, although he didn’t join the fray until very late in the day. Hellmuth was late-arriving even by his punctually-adverse standards thanks to a bout with food poisoning earlier in the day.
Notable eliminations on day 1 included Ari Engel, Jonathan Aguiar, Justin Smith, Matt Waxman, Steve O’Dwyer, Joseph Cheong, Kathy Liebert, Jerry Yang, Carter King, Michael Katz, Eric Froehlich, Benvenuti, and Seidel.
