Atlantic City Casinos Close, Delaying Borgata Summer OpenCasinos Will Remain Closed Until a State Budget Is Passed |
|
All 12 Atlantic City casinos were closed this morning due to a New Jersey state budget impasse that has shuttered all but essential state government offices.
The state's Casino Control Commission ordered the casinos closed several days ago because the casinos can't be operated without the Commission regulating its actions. As of today, Commission employees are unable to work because a state budget isn't in place.
The casinos appealed the decision to the state's Supreme Court, but the judge in the case ruled for the state.
The casinos will remain closed until state lawmakers pass a budget for 2006-07. Last year's budget expired July 1. Lawmakers are in Trenton trying to come up with a budget that both the state's Democrats and Republicans can agree on.
The budget woes played havoc with at least one poker event. The Borgata Summer Open, a 13-event series, was scheduled to begin today (July 5). Officials at the Borgata have not yet decided how the Open will be rescheduled.
