Gus Hansen Faces Off Against Tom DwanA total of 32 players returned for day 2 of event no. 2, the World Series of Poker Heads Up Championship, looking for a ticket to the Elite Eight. It took over nine hours of play, but the field was finally set after Gus Hansen dispatched Tom Dwan at midnight.

Hansen is now guaranteed at least $138,852 and is in great shape to defend his WSOP Europe title. Hansen’s first bracelet came in September of 2010, when he defeated a field of 103 for the $444,925 prize. Should he win his next three matches, he’ll take home $851,192 and his second WSOP bracelet.

In addition to defeating Dwan, Hansen has already won matches against Daniel Alaei, Greg Brooks and Jason Mercier and the matches only get tougher from here.

Standing in his way is a stellar line up of opponents that include WPT London Poker Classic winner Jake Cody, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Eric Froehlich, Matt Marafioti, Nikolay Evdakov, David Paredes and Anthony Guetti.

Dwan’s mincash was worth $67,436. Others who squeaked into the money included Steve Billirakis, Olivier Busquet, Jonathan Jaffe, John Duthie and Richard Lyndaker.

The remaining players will return on Thursday at 3 p.m. local time to battle down to the final two. Here is a look at the matches.
