It wasn’t quite a wire-to-wire victory, but Maxim Lykov did what a final table chip leader should do and used his well-earned ammunition to claim his first World Series of Poker bracelet in event no. 54, the last $1,000 no-limit hold’em event of the summer.
The Russian pro defeated 2,644 players over the course of the five-day event and earned $648,880 for his efforts. Lykov now has over $3.2 million in career winnings and his quietly put together one of the more impressive years on the tournament circuit.
In January, Lykov final tabled the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $25,000 High Roller Event, finishing third for $369,490. In May, he finished fourth in the EPT San Remo Main Event, where he banked $430,621.
Now with five final tables on the year, Lykov has put himself into third place in Card Player’s Player of the Year standings, sitting just behind Sam Stein and Galen Hall.

Maxim Lykov opened the pot for 125,000 from under the gun, Sebastien Roy moved all in for about 700,000 and Lykov called.

Joshua Evans Eliminated in 8th Place ($69,230)

Douglas MacKinnon Eliminated in 7th Place ($90,604)
Douglas MacKinnon open-shoved before the flop for around 750,000 and Maxim Lykov called from the big blind.

Stanislav Alekhin Eliminated in 6th Place ($119,598)
Stanislav Alekhin was left on the short stack after Ren Zhang doubled through him after flopping a set earlier in the level. Alekhin found a quick doubly up shortly after, but then quickly managed to get it all in before the flop with K Q against Zhang’s A Q.
The board came 7 5 4 10 8, no help for Stanislav Alekhin who was eliminated in 6th place ($119,598).
Harald Olsen Eliminated in 5th Place ($159,134)
Harald Olsen open-shoved before the flop from the small blind and Warren Wooldridge called from the big blind.

The board came 10 7 3 10 5, no help to Harald Olsen who was eliminated in 5th place ($159,134).
Ren Zhang Eliminated in 4th Place ($213,539)
On the very next hand after Harald Olsen’s 5th place elimination, Maxim Lykov opened the pot for 175,000 from late position and Ren Zhang called from the big blind.
The flop came 8 7 4, Zhang checked, Lykov bet 185,000 and Zhang called.
The turn was the K, Zhang checked, Lykov bet 285,000 and Zahang called.
The river was the 8, Zhang moved all in and Lykov called.
Zhang showed 10 9 for a missed straight draw and Lykov turned over K 6 for a flush on the river to win the pot. Ren Zhang was eliminated in 4th place ($213,539).
Warren Wooldridge Eliminated in 3rd Place ($288,946)
Warren Wooldridge button-raised to 300,000 before the flop, Maxim Lykov shoved from the big blind and Wooldridge called all in.

The board came 10 9 7 6 2, giving Lykov middle pair on the flop to win the pot. Warren Wooldridge was eliminated in 3rd place while Maxim Lykov took the chip lead going into heads-up play.
Dror Michaelo Eliminated in 2nd Place ($401,296)
Dror Michaelo began heads-up play with a chip deficit of slightly less than 2:1 with about 4.6 million to Maxim Lykov’s 9 million. Despite having plenty of play left with about 38 BBs, Michaelo had no qualms about getting it all in.
In one of the first hands of heads-up play, he shipped nearly 1 million chips across the table after rivering top pair against Lykov’s flopped straight. That hand gave Lykov more than a 3:1 chip advantage when Michaelo three-bet shoved from the button before the flop with
K 5 against Lykov’s A K,
The board came A Q Q 9 7, giving Lykov top two pair on the flop to win the pot. Dror Michaelo was eliminated in 2nd place ($401,296) while Maxim Lykov wins the gold bracelet for Event #54 and the $648,800 grand prize.
