Mickey Petersen has won the PokerStars European Poker Tour Copenhagen Main Event, earning 2,515,000 Danish Kroner ($452,257), as well as 912 Card Player Player of the Year points. As a result, Peterson now sits in a tie for 20th place in the overall POY standings.
To capture this, his first major live tournament title, Petersen had to outlast a field of 299 players in this 37,250 DKK ($6,600) buy-in Main Event, and in the end had to survive an epic six-hour long heads-up battle against runner-up Pierre Neuville.
Known as ‘mement_mori’ online, Petersen has been a consistent successful online tournament player, with $1,638,639 in prior tournament winnings and only one six-figure score before this victory. Petersen, who comes from near Copenhagen, has had a number of small cashes on the live tournament circuit, including ten EPT prelim event cashes, but today was by far the biggest live result for the 22-year-old Dane.
“This is so special to me. Not only is it the first time I’ve done well in a live event but doing it on home turf like this is just amazing. It was a long and tough heads-up against Pierre. He was really tough. I have a lot of admiration for him for sticking so long. I was very impressed.”
The 69-year-old Neuville did put in a impressive effort, ultimately securing his second runner-up finish in an EPT Main Event, and earning 1,600,000 DKK ($287,718).
A total of 48 players made the money including Steve O’Dwyer, who continued his strong form from the end of 2011 with a seventh-place finish for DKK 290,000 ($52,149), and 2011 WSOP Main Event runner-up Martin Staszko, who finished 16th for 75,000 DKK ($13,486).
