In two weeks, the Commerce Casino kicks off the monthlong schedule of its California State Poker Championship, a 20-tournament series that climaxes with a $2,580 championship on Sept. 23.

For hold'em aficionados, the Commerce Casino is the place to be next month because every tournament is centered on the uber-popular form of poker, Texas hold'em.

And with the buy-in for the tournaments so low - all tournaments except the championship cost between $330 and $540 - expect a lot of players both in and out of California to try their hand at one of these events.

Some of the highlights of the California State Poker Championship include:

  • The first turbo no-limit hold'em 6-handed event, scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 13 ($330).
  • The first ladies no-limit hold'em tourney in the history of the California State Championship, slated for Sunday, Sept. 10. The winner will receive a $1,060 buy-in to the ladies event at the LA Poker Classic. The winner in that event will win a $25,000 buy-in to the WPT World Championship in April 2007.
  • A guaranteed $250,000 prize pool for the $330 buy-in no-limit event on Sept. 9.
  • Two $540 buy-in supersatellites on Friday, Sept. 22, one at 11:30 a.m. and one at 6:30 p.m. Approximately 40 players will earn a seat at the California State Poker Championship no-limit hold'em event beginning the next day.
  • The $2,580-buy-in Grand Finale main event on Saturday, Sept. 23, giving one player the chance to claim the title of California State Champion. The final table will be played the next day, and is expected to offer a prize pool of more than $300,000.
