In the 43-year history of the World Series of Poker, no player from Portugal had ever won a gold bracelet.
That changed on Saturday, when Francisco Da Costa Santos took down event no. 6 at the WSOP Europe, the €1,650 six-handed pot-limit Omaha event.
The 36-year-old Da Costa Santos defeated a field of 206 to earn the €83,275 first-place prize and 360 Card Player Player of the Year points.
“Poker is still very new in my country,” Da Costa Santos said of Portugal. “We do not have so many players right now. But I think it’s going to catch on and be more popular. There are a lot of younger players now who are starting to get interested in the game.”
The final table featured Andrew Lichtenberger, Aku Joentausta and eventual runner-up finisher Ana Marquez, who fell just short of becoming only the second female to win a bracelet at the WSOP Europe.
Here is a look at the final table results.
