Gambling: More Than Half Of Adults In Country Played The Lotto Last YearForm Of Gambling Is By Far The Most Popular |

Casinos are not the most popular form of gambling in the United States, as that distinction belongs to the lotteries, which run in most states.
According to a recent poll conducted by the American Gaming Association, 53 percent of individuals age 21 and over played the lottery at least once in 2012. The margin of error for the survey was plus or minus 3.5 points. Casino gambling was 32 percent.
Here’s a mind-boggling stat: Last November, when the Powerball reached a record $580 million, 130,000 tickets were being sold per minute nationwide.
The lottery is one of the most controversial forms of gambling. It has long been argued that it’s a regressive tax on the poor and actually damaging to state economies. Supporters say the revenue is needed to help fund things like education.
Perhaps due to its popularity and long odds, lottery winners, especially those who win huge sums, are thrust into the spotlight. Some parlay their win into a better life, but we also often hear of those whose lives turn to trash despite the influx of cash.
State-run lotteries could be the entry point for some places to get involved with the Internet gambling industry. Illinois, for example, has already started to sell tickets online. Michigan, home to a devastated Detroit, is looking at doing the same.
