Dozens of Transportation Security Administration employees have been disciplined in some fashion after it was discovered that they had been involved with an intra-office gambling ring at Pittsburgh International Airport, according to reporting from CBS.
It reportedly wasn’t an innocuous March Madness pool that got them in trouble. Some allegedly profited from the gambling, which took place exclusively on sports.
Five employees were recommended for termination, 47 for suspension and 10 given letters of reprimand, CBS reported. They all can appeal their respective cases.
The TSA said in a statement, “TSA holds all of its employees to the highest standards of conduct and accountability. The agency has taken the appropriate and necessary steps to discipline those involved to include employment terminations, suspensions or letters of reprimand.”
The government agency added that sums weren’t too large and no criminal charges will be filed in the matter. The investigation took several months. All together, around 300 employees work for the TSA at Pittsburgh International Airport.
The ring was classified as “small-time,” but the TSA nevertheless took the situation extremely seriously because apparently it’s relevant to airport security.
In 2010, 8,195,359 passengers flew through the airport.
