A second Internet gambling license has been awarded in the Garden State.
The Associated Press reported that the Golden Nugget Atlantic City has received an OK from state regulators to offer online versions of casino games to people within the state’s borders. Games are expected to kick off statewide on Nov. 26.
The casino will work with Bally Technologies, a firm which will run the back-end of the product.
The Borgata was the first casino in the state to receive regulatory approval.
The reason why the state authorized online betting? Answer: to give the casinos some help.
Over the past seven years, New Jersey casinos have gone from $5.2 billion in gaming revenue in 2006 to what could be under $3 billion this year.
Other states in the region have taken big steps to beef up their respective brick-and-mortar gambling, so New Jersey had to stay ahead of the pack some way. The state is also fighting the federal government to get authorization to offer sports betting.
New Jersey legalized online gambling back in February of this year, and became the third state in the nation to do so. Nevada and Delaware are the others.
Recently, there was a study that predicted the online poker market in New Jersey to be worth as much as $65 million in the first year of operation. It could grow to nearly $100 million by the tenth year of play.
