Sometimes when you win the lottery you actually lose.
A Pennsylvania man mistakenly threw away $1.25 million worth of winning lottery tickets, and that money will stay with the state, according to a report from the York Daily Record.
The tickets were bought by a lottery regular in 2013, and many months went by before the Pennsylvania Lottery made a public announcement that the winner had until Mar. 13 of this year to cash all 25 of them in. However, no one did.
It eventually made sense to state officials why they went unclaimed for an entire year.
Somehow the tickets were traced to a grocery store in the town of York, and it was later revealed to the regular customer, who is a creature of habit by playing the same numbers day after day, that he had won $1.25 million. He apparently realized what he had done many months ago.
According to the worker who sold him the tickets on his winning day in 2013, and just recently on the day he heard the horrible news, the man blew off steam by spending $400 on some more tickets. He typically spends around $100 per day on tickets.
The Pennsylvania Lottery website says that the revenue it generates “benefits older Pennsylvanians,” thanks to an assortment of programs. However, many critics of the lottery in general say that it amounts to a tax on the poor and vulnerable. Others have argued that lotteries are actually harmful to state economies. The debate rages on.
According to a poll conducted by the American Gaming Association, 53 percent of individuals aged 21 and over played the lottery at least once in 2012. Casino gambling was 32 percent.
State lotteries have gained some relevance within U.S. online poker discussions. The lotteries were a driving force behind the reinterpretation of the decades-old Wire Act in December 2011, which basically permitted states to pursue intrastate online gaming.
Some states have pursued online gaming in the form of poker, while others have dabbled with online lottery sales. Expansion of web-based betting is expected to expand in the future.
