Twitter, Slot Machines Have Much In Common: StudySocial Media Addiction Like Gambling Addiction: Doctor |

A doctor at a prominent health facility in the United States has drawn a parallel between overuse of social media and degenerate gambling.
The comments came in the wake of research conducted at the University of Missouri, which surveyed nearly 600 people with Twitter accounts.
The participants, who told researchers that they are on Twitter for nearly an hour a day, five days a week, were asked about how their usage, categorized as “excessive,” affected their personal relationships outside of the digital sphere.
Dr. Scott Bea, a psychologist in Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Behavioral Health, said that the thrill of experiencing interaction on social media is comparable to winning in a casino.
“You can start chasing that good feeling or chasing that excitement and over-invest in it,” Bea said. “And just like with a gambler’s addiction, you don’t get paid off every time. You only get paid off once in a while and that makes a strong allegiance to that slot machine.”
