A new poll in Pennsylvania shows that by a more than two-to-one margin people in the state support the government regulating online gaming.
The poll was conducted by Omega Group. It surveyed 769 Pennsylvania registered voter households. It found that 58 percent support Pennsylvania legalizing and regulating online gaming, as compared to 26 percent who aren’t in favor of it.
The results are in stark contrast to the Sheldon Adelson-backed poll that found nearly 75 percent of voters in the Keystone State oppose legal online gaming. That poll has been discredited.
“Online poker and other forms of online gaming are already happening in the state but it is completely unregulated and offers no meaningful protections for minors, problem gamblers or safeguards for consumers,” John Pappas, executive director of Poker Players Alliance, said in a statement. “It’s clear Pennsylvanians believe this is a problem and they want a solution. They also want to see the state receive the tax benefit of a regulated online poker market for state programs. Today those dollars are going overseas. That money should stay in Pennsylvania.”
The state held a robust hearing on online poker in April. Several bills are currently on the table that seek to legalize and regulate online poker, among other web games.
If one had to bet, it would be wiser to put money on Pennsylvania legalizing online poker next year, rather than this year, but there is still a possibility for 2015.
In the meantime, some tech firms are finding casino partners in the state.
